Résumé Les états de flow sont des moments intensifiés de concentration, de motivation et de plaisir, conduisant à une absorption totale dans le moment présent. Un parallèle frappant existe entre les états de flow et les récits phénoménologiques de la vie quotidienne autistique. Nous analysons les composantes de la théorie du flow parallèlement aux récits autobiographiques autistiques afin d'explorer les similitudes et les différences, nous orientant ainsi vers une compréhension de la théorie du flow autistique. Nous mettons en évidence les considérations et les possibilités que cela peut offrir pour les futures recherches sur l'autisme, en particulier l'avantage que cela procure d'une approche non pathologisante de la recherche sur l'autisme, qui aide à expliquer les comportements contextualisés (c.-à-d., l'alignement entre la situation et ce qui se passe dans l'esprit d'une personne). En nous appuyant sur des récits autobiographiques autistiques, nous présentons quatre principes : (1) les personnes autistes sont particulièrement bien placées pour découvrir et gérer le flow ; (2) le flow autistique peut diverger qualitativement des modèles traditionnels du flow ; (3) les difficultés des personnes autistes à maintenir et à quitter le flow soulignent la nécessité d'examiner les transitions vers le flow et hors du flow ; et (4) les contraintes internes et externes au flow mettent en évidence l'existence d'un potentiel autistique non réalisé qui reste à découvrir. Les implications d'une théorie du flow autistique sont examinées en termes de la manière dont elle peut avoir un impact sur (a) notre compréhension conceptuelle de l'autisme, en fournissant des explications alternatives à des phénomènes précédemment étudiés, et (b) la manière dont nous construisons des environnements favorables pour les personnes autistes qui permettent au flow de s'épanouir dans les contextes de la pratique éducative, du bien-être et de la recherche.
