Résumé
Cette étude, demandée par des personnes autistes et menée par un chercheur autiste, est la première à explorer l'« inertie autistique », une difficulté généralisée et souvent invalidante à agir conformément à leurs intentions. Les recherches antérieures n'ont examiné l'initiation que dans le contexte de l'interaction sociale ou de conditions expérimentales. Cette étude est unique en ce qu'elle considère la difficulté à initier des tâches de tout type dans des contextes de vie réelle et recueille des données qualitatives directement auprès de personnes autistes. Quatre groupes de discussion en face à face et 2 en ligne (par texte) ont été menés auprès de 32 adultes autistes (19 femmes, 8 hommes et 5 autres), âgés de 23 à 64 ans, capables d'exprimer leurs expériences internes par des mots. Ils décrivent en détail les actions avec lesquelles ils ont des difficultés, ce qui rend l'action plus facile ou plus difficile, et l'impact sur leur vie. L'analyse thématique des transcriptions a mis en évidence quatre thèmes généraux : les descriptions de l'inertie, l'étayage pour soutenir l'action, l'influence du bien-être et l'impact sur les activités quotidiennes. Les participants ont décrit des difficultés à commencer, arrêter et changer d'activité qui n'étaient pas sous leur contrôle conscient. Bien que les difficultés de planification aient été fréquentes, un sous-groupe de participants a décrit une atteinte profonde de l'initiation même d'actions simples, évoquant davantage un trouble du mouvement. Les incitations et une activité compatible dans l'environnement favorisaient l'action, tandis que les difficultés de santé mentale et le stress exacerbaient les difficultés. L'inertie avait des effets généralisés sur les activités quotidiennes et le bien-être des participants. Cette recherche, attendue depuis longtemps, ouvre la voie à de nombreux domaines d'investigation supplémentaires afin de mieux comprendre l'inertie autistique et les stratégies de soutien efficaces.
