Résumé
Les « mouvements moteurs stéréotypés ou répétitifs » sont caractérisés comme des éléments centraux du diagnostic de l’autisme, mais de nombreux adultes autistes (et le mouvement de la neurodiversité) se les sont réappropriés sous le terme de « stimming ». Soutenus par un corpus croissant de recherches scientifiques, les adultes autistes soutiennent que ces comportements peuvent servir de mécanismes d’adaptation utiles, mais peu de recherches ont examiné le stimming du point de vue des adultes autistes. Au moyen d’entretiens et de groupes de discussion, nous avons demandé à 32 adultes autistes de partager leurs perceptions et leurs expériences du stimming, y compris les raisons pour lesquelles ils pratiquent le stimming, toute valeur que cela peut avoir pour eux et leurs perceptions des réactions des autres au stimming. À l’aide d’une analyse thématique, nous avons identifié deux thèmes : le stimming comme (1) un mécanisme d’autorégulation et (2) un comportement dépourvu d’acceptation sociale, mais qui peut devenir accepté grâce à la compréhension. Les adultes autistes ont souligné l’importance du stimming comme mécanisme adaptatif qui les aide à s’apaiser ou à communiquer des émotions ou des pensées intenses et se sont donc opposés à un traitement visant à éliminer ce comportement.
