Résumé

Cette étude exploratoire à petite échelle visait à développer une compréhension de la signification du bien-être et de l'appartenance sociale tels qu'ils sont représentés dans les récits d'adultes sur le spectre de l'autisme. Le recours à une approche interprétativiste a facilité l'étude des facteurs potentiellement contributifs à ces expériences vécues afin d'éclairer de futures recherches concernant à la fois ce sujet et la prestation de services pour les adultes sur le spectre de l'autisme. Le projet a comporté une analyse thématique des numéros du magazine Asperger United (AU). Quatre grands thèmes principaux ont été identifiés : répondre aux besoins personnels, vivre avec les conséquences d'une identité « altérisée », la connexion et la reconnaissance, et les relations et la défense des droits. Les adultes autistes ont signalé de nombreux obstacles au sentiment d'appartenir à plusieurs espaces sociaux et l'effet préjudiciable que cela avait sur leur bien-être. Les récits positifs de bien-être reposaient fondamentalement sur des sentiments de connexion et de reconnaissance de la part des autres, ainsi que sur des relations positives et acceptantes, les espaces dirigés par des personnes autistes, en particulier la conférence Autscape, étant fréquemment cités comme revêtant une importance centrale pour accroître les sentiments de bien-être et d'appartenance. Cette étude a démontré la nécessité de moins mettre l'accent sur la remédiation et davantage sur la limitation de l'isolement social des personnes autistes.

This small-scale exploratory study sought to develop an understanding of the meaning of well-being and social belonging as represented within the narratives of adults on the autism spectrum. Employing an interpretivist approach facilitated the investigation of potential contributory factors to these lived experiences in order to inform further research regarding both this topic, and service provision for adults on the autism spectrum. The project involved a thematic analysis of issues of the magazine Asperger United (AU). Four broad main themes were identified: meeting personal needs, living with the consequences of an ‘othered’ identity, connection and recognition, and relationships and advocacy. Autistic adults reported many barriers to feeling that they belonged in a number of social spaces and the detrimental effect this had on their wellbeing. Fundamental to positive narratives of wellbeing, were feelings of connection and recognition from others and positive accepting relationships, with autistic-led spaces, particularly the Autscape conference, being frequently cited as of central significance in increasing feelings of wellbeing and belonging. This study has demonstrated a need for less focus on remediation and more on limiting the social isolation of autistic people.
