Le projet pilote d’engagement communautaire Talking Together a réuni des binômes d’inconnus autistes et non autistes afin de : (1) parler de leurs expériences de la solitude dans leur ville locale ; et (2) réfléchir à des réponses potentielles, coproduites, à ce problème. Le projet avait évolué comme objectif secondaire à partir d’un besoin initial d’acquérir des données de conversation naturalistes pour ma recherche doctorale en linguistique, qui étudiait une reformulation théorique de l’usage du langage autistique comme « différent » plutôt que « déficient ». Le souhait de faire de la collecte de données une expérience significative pour les participants en elle-même était central dans la conception de la recherche, et le projet Talking Together sur la solitude a donc été conçu comme un moyen d’y parvenir. Toutefois, ce n’est qu’une fois la recherche en cours que le potentiel d’un impact immédiat et précieux est devenu apparent. Cet article examine les réussites et les difficultés du projet pilote Talking Together en tant que recherche participative menée par des personnes autistes, et explore comment les principes d’une recherche engagée et participative peuvent être appliqués afin de maximiser l’impact, même lorsque l’engagement n’est pas un objectif principal. Il explore également la nature « participative » de la recherche participative lorsque le chercheur appartient au groupe de parties prenantes marginalisé.
