CONTEXTE : Une communication non verbale atypique est requise pour un diagnostic d’autisme, mais on sait peu de choses sur la manière dont les adultes autistes utilisent les gestes, les expressions faciales et d’autres comportements non verbaux dans les interactions sociales, en particulier du point de vue des adultes autistes. Les objectifs de cette étude étaient de comprendre : (1) les expériences des adultes autistes concernant l’utilisation de la communication non verbale dans les interactions, (2) la manière dont la communication non verbale affecte la vie des personnes autistes, et (3) la manière dont les adultes autistes gèrent les différences de communication non verbale. MÉTHODES : 27 fils de discussion issus du forum de discussion Internet wrongplanet.net, contenant tous des dialogues centrés sur la communication non verbale, ont été soumis à une analyse qualitative. Un codage inductif et déductif a été utilisé afin d’identifier des extraits pertinents concernant les expériences de mauvaise communication, les forces en communication et les stratégies compensatoires. Au total, 362 extraits ont été codés (kappa = .79). Les extraits codés ont ensuite été extraits et examinés afin d’identifier des thèmes, au moyen d’une validation auprès des participants. RÉSULTATS : Les principaux thèmes comprenaient : (1) des différences cognitives conduisant les adultes autistes à nécessiter davantage de temps et d’énergie pour gérer la communication non verbale dans les interactions ; (2) la mauvaise communication liée à la communication non verbale est bidirectionnelle ; (3) les différences de communication non verbale peuvent avoir une incidence négative sur la vie et le bien-être des adultes autistes ; (4) les adultes autistes utilisent un éventail de compétences et de stratégies pour gérer la communication non verbale ; et (5) les adultes autistes présentent une variabilité dans la production et l’interprétation des signaux non verbaux. CONCLUSION : Plusieurs de nos thèmes, notamment la mauvaise communication mutuelle et les incidences négatives d’une communication atypique, concordent avec des travaux qualitatifs antérieurs sur les expériences de communication des adultes autistes. Les résultats actuels apportent un nouvel éclairage sur les facteurs internes et externes influençant les expériences de communication non verbale des adultes autistes, en particulier les processus cognitifs impliqués. Nous plaidons en faveur de solutions qui font reposer la responsabilité d’une communication efficace sur tous les membres de la société. Par exemple, partager et accepter les modalités de communication préférées, et vérifier si un message a été correctement reçu au lieu de faire des suppositions.
