Nombre des traits de personnalité et comportementaux (p. ex., l’imperméabilité sociale, la franchise dans la conversation, le manque d’imagination, l’affinité pour la solitude, la difficulté à exprimer ses émotions) dont on sait qu’ils sont sensibles au contexte (avec qui ?) et au groupe de référence (selon qui ?) apparaissent également dans les évaluations des traits autistiques fondées sur des questionnaires. Par conséquent, deux expériences ont examiné les effets de la spécification des contextes et des groupes de référence lors de l’évaluation des traits autistiques chez des participants autistes et non autistes. L’expérience 1 (124 participants autistes et 124 participants non autistes) a démontré que le contexte importe lors de l’évaluation des traits autistiques (F(1,244) = 267.5, p <.001, η2p =.523). Lorsque le contexte du Broad Autism Phenotype Questionnaire était spécifié comme l’exogroupe des participants (p. ex., « J’aime être avec des personnes non autistes » ou « J’aime être avec des personnes autistes »), les participants autistes et non autistes ont tous deux déclaré eux-mêmes présenter davantage de traits autistiques ; lorsque le contexte était spécifié comme l’endogroupe des participants, les participants ont déclaré présenter moins de traits autistiques. L’expérience 2 (82 participants autistes et 82 participants non autistes) a démontré que le groupe de référence importe lors de l’évaluation des traits autistiques (F(2,160) = 94.38, p <.001, η2p =.541). Lorsque le groupe de référence sur la Social Responsiveness Scale était spécifié comme l’exogroupe des participants (p. ex., « Selon les personnes non autistes, j’ai un contact visuel inhabituel »), les participants autistes ont déclaré présenter davantage de traits autistiques ; lorsque le groupe de référence était leur endogroupe, les participants autistes ont déclaré présenter moins de traits autistiques. Les participants non autistes semblaient insensibles au groupe de référence sur la Social Responsiveness Scale. Des analyses exploratoires ont suggéré que, lorsque ni le contexte ni le groupe de référence ne sont spécifiés (pour l’évaluation des traits autistiques sur l’Autism-Spectrum Quotient), les participants autistes et non autistes utilisent tous deux la majorité (« personnes non autistes ») comme contexte et groupe de référence implicites.
