Résumé

Les initiatives d'emploi accompagné incluant une expérience professionnelle (p. ex., des stages) peuvent accroître les taux d'emploi des personnes autistes. Cependant, ces initiatives (a) ne reposent souvent pas sur des données probantes, (b) se concentrent sur des résultats quantitatifs tels que les taux d'emploi et (c) examinent les changements au niveau du groupe sans tenir compte de la variabilité individuelle. Compte tenu des effets que le (non-)emploi peut avoir sur le bien-être des personnes autistes, il est important d'examiner l'impact plus large des initiatives d'emploi accompagné. Cette étude a évalué les résultats à long terme en matière d'emploi et les résultats plus larges chez des adultes autistes ayant participé à une initiative de stages en emploi accompagné, aux niveaux du groupe et de l'individu. Des adultes autistes sans déficience intellectuelle (N = 27, « stagiaires » ; âge moyen = 23,3), participant à des stages dans sept organisations, ont pris part à l'étude. Les stagiaires ont renseigné (a) des caractéristiques liées à l'emploi, (b) les compétences de la vie quotidienne, (c) le sentiment général d'efficacité personnelle, (d) la qualité de vie et (e) la santé mentale avant le stage, puis six mois et 12 à 24 mois après le stage. Le taux d'emploi global est passé de 25,93 % à 55,56 % entre avant le stage et 12 à 24 mois après le stage, et le revenu ainsi que le nombre d'heures travaillées ont également augmenté. Les compétences de la vie quotidienne se sont améliorées, mais les autres mesures de résultats plus larges n'ont pas changé significativement au niveau du groupe, malgré la variabilité individuelle. Ces données probantes ont des implications importantes pour le soutien des résultats à long terme des personnes autistes.

Supported employment initiatives with work experience (e.g. internships) can increase employment rates for autistic people. However, such initiatives (a) are often not evidence-based, (b) focus on quantitative outcomes such as employment rates and (c) examine group-level changes without considering individual variability. Considering the effects that (un)employment can have on autistic people's well-being, it is important to examine the wider impact of supported employment initiatives. This study evaluated the long-term employment and wider outcomes of autistic adults who engaged with a supported employment internship initiative at group and individual levels. Autistic adults without a learning disability (N = 27, ‘interns’; M age = 23.3) involved in internships across seven organisations, participated in the study. Interns reported on (a) employment-related characteristics, (b) daily living skills, (c) general self-efficacy, (d) quality of life and (e) mental health pre-internship at six and 12–24 months post-internship. The overall employment rate increased from 25.93% to 55.56% from pre- to 12–24 months post-internship, and income and number of hours worked also increased. There were improvements in daily living skills, but other wider outcome measures did not change significantly at a group level, despite individual variability. This evidence has important implications for supporting long-term outcomes for autistic people.
