The school environment and teachers in particular can have lasting impact on the academic, social, and emotional wellbeing of autistic students. It is imperative that educators come to understand common autistic traits, experiences, and support needs. This reflective analysis calls on educators to reflexively examine the ubiquitous norms deeply rooted in the education system as well as their own implicit biases about autistic learners. It draws on the literature as well as the author's positionality as an autistic adult who is both a teacher educator and a special education teacher of autistic children. This chapter dispels damaging narratives about autism and suggests avenues for allyship with autistic students through relational and environmental safety, teacher and student self-reflection and partnership, and an essential shift to self-determination for autistic students.
