Résumé

La complexité des organisations humaines pose le défi de comprendre et de naviguer dans les hiérarchies sociales. Si la « déficience sociale » est une caractéristique définissant l'autisme, alors ces défis peuvent être accrus pour les personnes autistes. Nous rejetons le postulat de déficits sociaux, mais suivons les recommandations visant à étudier comment le comportement social autistique diverge des normes neurotypiques. Nous examinons des écrits autistiques ainsi que des travaux sur la gestion de la réputation, le non-conformisme et le raisonnement moral afin d'affirmer que les personnes autistes n'aiment pas les hiérarchies sociales, trouvent la recherche de statut illogique, préfèrent les relations égalitaires et cherchent souvent à signaler les actes répréhensibles commis par les autorités. Nous présentons trois causes possibles : (1) une motivation sociale réduite ; (2) une propriété émergente du monotropisme, des intérêts spécifiques et d'un style cognitif délibératif ; (3) une motivation accrue à s'engager dans des interactions égalitaires. Notre analyse a des implications pour la caractérisation de la socialité atypique dans l'autisme. Le domaine s'est concentré sur les déficits, mais notre revue met en évidence les forces sociales autistiques (p. ex., moins d'égoïsme, droiture morale, équité, honnêteté, loyauté). Notre analyse a des implications pour la compréhension de passages difficiles de la vie autistique, tels que les concours de popularité au lycée, les messages contradictoires sur le lieu de travail et les interactions sociales insatisfaisantes entre neurotypes.

The complexity of human organizations poses the challenge of understanding and navigating social hierarchies. If 'social impairment' is a defining feature of autism, then these challenges may be heightened for autistic persons. We reject the premise of social deficits but follow recommendations to investigate how autistic social behavior diverges from neurotypical norms. We review autistic writings and also scholarship on reputation management, non-conformity and moral reasoning to argue that autistic people dislike social hierarchies, find status-seeking illogical, prefer egalitarian relationships, and often seek to report wrong-doing by authorities. We outline three possible causes: (1) reduced social motivation; (2) emergent property of monotropism, special interests and deliberative cognitive style; (3) enhanced motivation to engage in egalitarian interactions. Our account has implications for characterizing atypical sociality in autism. The field has been deficit focused, but our review highlights autistic social strengths (e.g., less selfishness, moral rectitude, fairness, honesty, loyalty). Our account has implications for understanding difficult passages of autistic life such as popularity contests in high school, mixed messages in the workplace, and unsatisfying social interactions between neurotypes.
