De nombreuses personnes autistes n’apprennent qu’à l’âge adulte qu’elles sont autistes. Les parents peuvent attendre pour dire à un enfant qu’il est autiste jusqu’à ce qu’ils estiment que l’enfant est « prêt ». Dans cette étude, une équipe participative de chercheurs autistes et non autistes a examiné si le fait d’apprendre que l’on est autiste à un plus jeune âge est associé à un bien-être accru et à une qualité de vie spécifique à l’autisme chez des étudiants universitaires autistes. Des étudiants autistes (n = 78) ont répondu à une enquête en ligne. Ils ont indiqué quand et comment ils ont appris qu’ils étaient autistes, ce qu’ils ressentaient à propos de l’autisme lorsqu’ils ont appris pour la première fois qu’ils étaient autistes et maintenant, ainsi que le moment auquel ils diraient à des enfants autistes qu’ils sont autistes. Le fait d’apprendre plus tôt que l’on est autiste était associé à une qualité de vie et à un bien-être accrus à l’âge adulte. Cependant, le fait d’apprendre que l’on est autiste à un âge plus avancé était associé à des émotions plus positives à propos de l’autisme lorsqu’on apprenait pour la première fois que l’on est autiste. Les participants ont exprimé des émotions à la fois positives et négatives à propos de l’autisme et ont mis en évidence des facteurs contextuels à prendre en compte lorsqu’on dit à un enfant qu’il est autiste. Les résultats suggèrent que dire à un enfant qu’il est autiste à un plus jeune âge lui donne les moyens d’agir en lui donnant accès à du soutien et une base pour la compréhension de soi qui l’aide à s’épanouir à l’âge adulte. Résumé vulgarisé Les personnes apprennent à des âges différents qu’elles sont autistes. Nous voulions savoir si dire plus tôt aux enfants qu’ils sont autistes les aide à se sentir mieux dans leur vie lorsqu’ils grandissent. Nous sommes une équipe d’étudiants et de professeurs autistes et non autistes. Soixante-dix-huit étudiants universitaires autistes ont répondu à notre enquête en ligne. Ils ont expliqué comment ils ont appris qu’ils étaient autistes et ce qu’ils ressentaient à l’idée d’être autistes. Ils ont également expliqué ce qu’ils ressentent maintenant à propos de leur vie. Un nombre à peu près égal d’étudiants ont appris qu’ils étaient autistes par des médecins et par leurs parents. Les étudiants qui ont appris qu’ils étaient autistes lorsqu’ils étaient plus jeunes se sentaient plus heureux de leur vie que les personnes qui l’ont appris lorsqu’elles étaient plus âgées. Les étudiants qui ont appris qu’ils étaient autistes lorsqu’ils étaient plus âgés se sentaient plus heureux d’être autistes lorsqu’ils l’ont appris pour la première fois que les personnes qui n’ont pas eu à attendre aussi longtemps. Notre étude montre qu’il est probablement préférable de dire aux personnes qu’elles sont autistes dès que possible. Les étudiants qui ont participé à notre étude ne pensaient pas qu’il était judicieux d’attendre que les enfants soient adultes pour leur dire qu’ils sont autistes. Ils ont dit que les parents devraient dire à leurs enfants qu’ils sont autistes de manières qui les aident à comprendre et à se sentir bien à propos de qui ils sont.
