Résumé

Seize adultes (diagnostiqués ou s'identifiant eux-mêmes comme autistes) ont participé à l'une des deux itérations d'un programme de dix semaines dirigé par des personnes autistes, visant à aider les adultes autistes à en apprendre davantage sur l'autisme dans le contexte d'un groupe de pairs. Les motivations à participer au programme comprenaient le désir : (1) d'explorer l'autisme ; (2) de s'autonomiser ; et (3) de développer des stratégies pratiques et des mécanismes d'adaptation. Des entretiens ont été menés à l'issue du programme, puis à nouveau 6 mois plus tard. Au moyen d'une analyse thématique, trois thèmes ont été identifiés : (1) l'appréciation de la nature du programme dirigé par des personnes autistes ; (2) l'unité dans la diversité ; et (3) le développement d'une perspective positive et pratique sur l'autisme. Ces résultats initiaux prometteurs soulignent la valeur du soutien entre pairs dirigé par des personnes autistes pour les personnes récemment diagnostiquées/identifiées comme autistes.

Sixteen adults (diagnosed or self-identified as autistic) participated in one of two iterations of a ten-week autistic-led programme, aimed at helping autistic adults learn more about autism within a peer group context. Motivations for taking part in the programme included a desire for: (1) exploration of autism; (2) empowerment; and (3) the development of practical strategies and coping mechanisms. Interviews were conducted upon completion of the programme and again 6 months later. Using thematic analysis, three themes were identified: (1) appreciation of the autistic-led nature of the programme; (2) unity in diversity; and (3) developing a positive, practical outlook on autism. These promising initial results highlight the value of autistic-led peer support for those recently diagnosed/identified as autistic.
