Résumé
Les personnes autistes socialisent et communiquent différemment des personnes non autistes. Cependant, les descriptions définitives de ce à quoi pourrait ressembler ce style de communication sociale, dans une perspective autiste, ont jusqu’à présent été limitées. Cette recherche qualitative a exploré les récits de personnes autistes concernant leurs propres comportements de communication sociale et leurs expériences d’interactions en face à face, afin de mieux comprendre le style de communication sociale autiste. Neuf adultes autistes (4 femmes, 1 personne non binaire, 4 hommes ; âgés de 23 à 70 ans) ont participé à un groupe de discussion en ligne de type forum pendant deux semaines, en prenant part à des discussions sur la manière dont ils signalaient le (dés)intérêt et le (non-)plaisir au cours des conversations ; sur leurs comportements naturels de communication sociale ; sur ce qu’était le fait de parler avec des personnes autistes, par comparaison avec des personnes non autistes ; et sur toute autre chose qu’ils pensaient que les chercheurs devraient savoir. À partir de cela, cinq thèmes ont été élaborés : les expériences autistes de soi, de l’attention et de l’environnement ; les attentes autistes quant à la manière dont les interactions sociales devraient fonctionner ; les conflits entre les attentes autistes et les attentes normatives neurotypiques ; l’effort constant de compensation et de masquage ; et le fait de trouver et de créer des compréhensions partagées entre neurotypes. Nos résultats mettent en évidence l’interaction complexe entre les différences/difficultés autistes et l’environnement social des personnes autistes, et soulignent le rôle que jouent les environnements normatifs neurotypiques dans la construction de l’autisme comme handicap de la communication sociale.
