Contexte : Des recherches suggèrent que certains adultes autistes communiquent plus efficacement et établissent une relation de meilleure qualité avec d’autres personnes autistes qu’avec des personnes non autistes. Cela suggère que les résultats pour les personnes autistes dans des contextes de groupe peuvent dépendre de la composition diagnostique du groupe. Ici, nous avons examiné la collaboration verbale entre des adultes autistes et non autistes dans des groupes de même neurotype et de neurotypes mixtes au cours d’une tâche partagée. Méthodes : Nous avons réparti 136 adultes (73 autistes, 63 non autistes) dans 34 groupes de quatre personnes : tous autistes, tous non autistes, à majorité autiste ou à majorité non autiste. Afin de contrôler la divulgation sélective, un expérimentateur a informé les participants de la composition diagnostique de leur groupe avant l’étude sans révéler les diagnostics individuels. Les chercheurs ont enregistré les groupes en vidéo pendant une tâche de construction d’une tour de Jenga de 5 minutes, et les participants ont indiqué la qualité de leur relation avec le groupe. Les chercheurs ont transcrit et codé les vidéos pour la parole collaborative à l’aide d’un schéma de codage validé. Résultats : Les analyses préenregistrées ont révélé que les participants autistes exprimaient des opinions plus positives sur le groupe et sur leurs propres contributions que les participants non autistes. Les participants non autistes exprimaient davantage d’évaluations négatives du groupe et suscitaient davantage d’idées de construction. Les participants des groupes de neurotypes mixtes dirigeaient davantage de négativité envers les autres que les participants des groupes de même neurotype. Les participants autistes, mais non les participants non autistes, verbalisaient davantage de négativité dans les groupes mixtes. Des corrélations exploratoires ont révélé des liens entre certains aspects de la parole collaborative et la qualité de la relation. Discussion : Les adultes autistes exprimaient une positivité globale plus élevée, mais exprimaient davantage de négativité dans des contextes de groupes mixtes. Ces résultats étayent les données indiquant que les personnes autistes connaissent souvent une meilleure qualité de relation dans des groupes entièrement autistes et peuvent être plus sensibles aux environnements de groupes mixtes que les personnes non autistes.
