Résumé

Le terme « inertie » désigne l’expérience apparemment fréquente chez les personnes autistes de rester dans un état de repos ou un état de mouvement jusqu’à ce qu’une forme d’intervention externe se produise. Bien qu’il s’agisse d’un phénomène largement discuté dans la communauté autiste, il a été peu reconnu dans la littérature académique. La présente étude visait à faire progresser les connaissances sur l’inertie autistique en analysant un vaste échantillon qualitatif de discours naturalistes sur ce sujet provenant de communautés autistes en ligne sur la plateforme de médias sociaux « Reddit ». Nous avons identifié 501 publications pertinentes partagées entre 2005 et 2023, y compris 9 955 commentaires. Nous avons analysé les publications au moyen d’une analyse thématique réflexive avec une approche inductive. Nous avons identifié quatre thèmes, centrés sur les extrêmes « tout ou rien » de l’inertie (Thème 1), l’éventail de facteurs qui interagissent avec elle et l’exacerbent (Thème 2), ses répercussions joyeuses et souvent fortement invalidantes (Thème 3), et les diverses manières dont les utilisateurs de Reddit la gèrent (Thème 4). Nos résultats ont corroboré ceux d’études existantes fondées sur des entretiens et ont également mis au jour des éclairages supplémentaires, développant le « cercle vicieux » de l’inertie, ses effets fatigants et son interaction avec d’autres conditions fréquemment concomitantes. Nous discutons de ces expériences moins rapportées et identifions ce que nous savons — et ce qu’il nous reste encore à comprendre — concernant les caractéristiques essentielles de l’inertie autistique.

The term 'inertia' refers to the seemingly common Autistic experience of remaining in a state of rest or a state of motion until there is some form of external intervention. While a heavily discussed phenomenon in the Autistic community, it has been scarcely acknowledged in the academic literature. The present study aimed to advance knowledge of Autistic inertia by analysing a large qualitative sample of naturalistic discourse on the topic from Autistic online communities on the social media platform, 'Reddit'. We identified 501 relevant posts shared between 2005 and 2023, including 9,955 comments. We analysed the posts using reflexive thematic analysis with an inductive approach. We identified four themes, centred on the "all or nothing" extremes of inertia (Theme 1), the range of factors that intersect with and exacerbate it (Theme 2), its joyful and often highly-disabling impacts (Theme 3), and the varied ways in which Reddit users manage it (Theme 4). Our findings corroborated those from existing interview-based studies and also uncovered additional insights, elaborating on 'the vicious cycle' of inertia, its fatiguing effects and its interaction with other commonly co-occurring conditions. We discuss these less-reported experiences and identify what we know - and are still yet to understand - about the key features of Autistic inertia.
