Résumé

RésuméContexte : Les adultes autistes font fréquemment l'expérience de stigmatisation sociale, qui peut être aggravée par d'autres identités marginalisées telles que la race, le genre et l'orientation sexuelle. Les adultes autistes noirs, en particulier, peuvent être confrontés à des difficultés uniques à l'intersection des préjugés raciaux et de la stigmatisation liée à l'autisme. Cependant, les expériences des personnes autistes ayant des identités marginalisées qui se recoupent restent peu explorées dans la recherche, ce qui contribue à une compréhension limitée de l'impact de la stigmatisation dans diverses communautés. Méthodes : La présente étude visait à mieux caractériser les expériences sociales des personnes autistes ayant des identités qui se recoupent, en mettant l'accent sur les adultes autistes noirs. Trente-deux adultes autistes (16 noirs, 16 blancs) ont réalisé un entretien semi-structuré concernant leurs expériences sociales. Les participants ont partagé des récits récents d'exclusion par les pairs, d'acceptation, de discrimination et de soutien qu'ils avaient vécus, ainsi que leurs sentiments entourant ces événements. Nous avons enregistré et transcrit ces entretiens et utilisé une approche inductive, ou guidée par les données, d'analyse thématique afin d'identifier les thèmes saillants dans les données. Résultats : Nous avons généré trois thèmes intersectionnels, qui englobaient l'impact unique de la stigmatisation sur les personnes ayant des identités qui se recoupent. Plus précisément, ces thèmes comprenaient : 1) la discrimination fondée sur l'identité façonnée par la race, le genre et le statut LGBTQ+ ; 2) les difficultés à obtenir et à assimiler un diagnostic d'autisme ; et 3) les difficultés à naviguer dans l'identité personnelle, en particulier parmi les participants autistes noirs. Bien que les adultes autistes aient largement rapporté des expériences de stigmatisation, les participants noirs ont souvent décrit des formes d'exclusion superposées liées à la fois à leur race et à leurs traits autistiques. Les femmes et les participants LGBTQ+ ont également rapporté des formes distinctes de marginalisation et d'effacement. Conclusion : Ces résultats mettent en évidence la manière dont la stigmatisation liée à l'autisme recoupe d'autres identités marginalisées pour façonner les expériences sociales. AbstractBackground: Autistic adults frequently experience social stigma, which may be compounded by additional marginalized identities such as race, gender, and sexual orientation. Black autistic adults, in particular, may face unique challenges at the intersection of racial bias and autism stigma. However, the experiences of autistic people with intersecting marginalized identities remain underexplored in research, contributing to a limited understanding of stigma’s impact across diverse communities.Methods: The current study sought to better characterize the social experiences of autistic people with intersecting identities, with an emphasis on Black autistic adults. 32 autistic adults (16 Black, 16 White) completed a semi-structured interview regarding their social experiences. Participants shared recent stories of peer exclusion, acceptance, discrimination and support that they had experienced, as well as their feelings surrounding these events. We recorded and transcribed these interviews and used an inductive, or data-driven, approach to thematic analysis to identify salient themes in the data. Results: We generated three intersectional themes, which encompassed the unique impact of stigma on those with intersecting identities. Specifically, these themes included: 1) identity-based discrimination shaped by race, gender, and LGBTQ+ status; (2) challenges in obtaining and processing an autism diagnosis; and (3) difficulties navigating personal identity, particularly among Black autistic participants. While autistic adults broadly reported stigma experiences, Black participants often described layered forms of exclusion related to both their race and autistic traits. Women and LGBTQ+ participants also reported distinct forms of marginalization and erasure. Conclusion: These findings highlight how autism stigma intersects with other marginalized identities to shape social experiences. Black autistic adults, along with autistic women and LGBTQ+ autistic people, may encounter compounded barriers to acceptance, identity development, and belonging. These results underscore the need for more inclusive research and supports that attend to the diversity of autistic experiences.
