Le bien-être financier est une composante importante du bien-être global des personnes, reflétant la capacité de mener une vie confortable et épanouissante. Pourtant, pratiquement rien n'est connu sur ce sujet pour les personnes autistes. Cette étude a comblé cette lacune en utilisant un plan séquentiel en deux phases à méthodes mixtes. Nous rapportons ici les résultats de l'étude qualitative de la phase 2. Dans cette étude, 21 participants autistes ont été sélectionnés de manière raisonnée sur la base de leur niveau de bien-être financier, dont 12 personnes ayant un bien-être financier élevé et 9 un bien-être financier faible, et ont été interrogés par un chercheur autiste. Nous avons identifié quatre thèmes grâce à une analyse thématique réflexive. Le fait d'avoir accès à un revenu stable faisait une énorme différence pour le bien-être financier des personnes. Les participants ont souligné la manière dont leurs soutiens sociaux plus larges, en particulier le soutien familial, façonnaient leur bien-être financier. Cependant, la planification financière était souvent difficile, en particulier pour les personnes qui n'avaient pas suffisamment d'argent pour satisfaire leurs besoins fondamentaux. Néanmoins, nos participants ont rapporté une forte volonté de garder le contrôle et d'éviter les risques inutiles. Nos résultats ont révélé à quel point l'argent compte dans la vie des personnes autistes. Les recherches futures devraient examiner les moyens par lesquels les personnes autistes pourraient obtenir des revenus plus fiables et identifier les moyens les plus efficaces de les aider à atteindre une résilience financière. Il aide à satisfaire les besoins fondamentaux des personnes (nourriture, vêtements, logement) et à mener la vie qu'elles souhaitent. Lorsque les personnes parlent de « bien-être financier », elles désignent à quel point elles se sentent en contrôle de leurs finances quotidiennes et quelle liberté elles ont de faire des choix pour profiter de la vie. Nous ne savons pas ce que les personnes autistes pensent de ces choses. C'est pourquoi nous avons réalisé notre étude. Nous avons parlé à 21 adultes autistes (24-69 ans) de ce qu'ils ressentaient à propos de leur situation financière. Nous avons délibérément parlé à des personnes qui nous avaient dit auparavant qu'elles se sentaient « financièrement bien » ou « financièrement mal » afin de pouvoir entendre un éventail d'opinions. Les personnes autistes nous ont dit que le bien-être financier signifiait avoir assez d'argent pour payer leurs besoins fondamentaux, disposer d'un filet de sécurité pour les factures imprévues et ne pas avoir à s'inquiéter de l'argent maintenant ou à l'avenir. Mais beaucoup estimaient qu'un bon bien-être financier n'était pas possible pour elles. Elles n'avaient souvent pas de revenu stable pour couvrir les dépenses quotidiennes. Cela limitait les choix qu'elles pouvaient faire. Malgré ces difficultés, les personnes autistes nous ont dit qu'elles travaillaient dur pour établir un budget et économiser de l'argent lorsqu'elles le pouvaient, car se sentir en insécurité financière était tout simplement trop stressant, en particulier lorsqu'elles ne pouvaient pas compter sur leur famille ou leurs amis pour obtenir du soutien. Cela les faisait se sentir mal sur le plan mental. Notre étude montre que de nombreux facteurs influencent le bien-être financier des personnes autistes. Nous avons besoin de davantage de recherches pour nous aider à comprendre comment les personnes autistes peuvent être soutenues afin d'atteindre une sécurité financière.
