Résumé

Contexte : La stigmatisation internalisée survient lorsque des personnes intègrent des stéréotypes négatifs à leur concept de soi. Dans la recherche, certaines personnes autistes ont présenté une stigmatisation internalisée, qui a été associée à une détresse psychologique accrue. En accord avec les priorités de recherche des personnes autistes, cette étude a examiné l'impact de la stigmatisation et de la stigmatisation internalisée sur la vie et l'identité des personnes autistes. Méthodes : Nous avons utilisé la méthode Photovoice, selon laquelle les personnes communiquent leur expérience vécue en prenant des photographies, ainsi que des techniques d'Analyse phénoménologique interprétative, qui se concentre sur des récits individuels approfondis. Résultats : Nos résultats soulignent la nature relationnelle de la stigmatisation, mettant en évidence la débrouillardise des personnes autistes pour répondre à la stigmatisation et la gérer de manière complexe et sensible au contexte. Les participants autistes se sont également appuyés sur leurs intérêts spécifiques et leur expression créative pour résister activement aux expériences de stigmatisation et les contrer. Conclusion : Les recherches futures devraient se concentrer sur le ciblage de la stigmatisation chez les personnes non autistes, ainsi que sur l'exploration des intérêts spécifiques et de la créativité des personnes autistes comme voie potentielle pour améliorer leur bien-être et favoriser une identité positive.

Background: Internalized stigma happens when people incorporate negative stereotypes into their self-concept. In research, some autistic people have shown internalized stigma, which has been associated with heightened psychological distress. Aligned with autistic people’s research priorities, this study investigated the impact of stigma and internalized stigma on autistic people’s lives and identities. Methods: We used the photovoice method, where people communicate their lived experience by taking photographs, and techniques of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, which focuses on in-depth individual narratives. Findings: Our findings emphasize the relational nature of stigma, highlighting autistic people’s resourcefulness in responding to and managing stigma in complex and context-sensitive ways. Autistic participants also drew on their focused interests and creative expression to actively resist and counter experiences of stigma. Conclusion: Future research should focus on targeting stigma among non-autistic people, and in exploring autistic people’s focused interests and creativity as a potential avenue for improving their well-being and fostering a positive identity.
