Résumé

Les difficultés à évoluer dans les environnements sociaux à l’âge adulte sont associées à des résultats moins favorables pour les adultes autistes. Cette étude examine comment des adultes autistes décrivent leurs difficultés et interactions sociales dans le contexte de leur transition vers l’âge adulte au moyen d’une série d’entretiens semi-structurés. Dix-sept adultes autistes (18 ans et plus, Mage = 26,7 ans) ont été interrogés. Des thèmes relatifs aux interactions sociales dans l’éducation et sur le lieu de travail ont été analysés. L’analyse des données a été réalisée dans le cadre théorique de la théorie critique du handicap et a utilisé une analyse thématique réflexive. Les participants ont exprimé des difficultés lors du contact social initial, conduisant à l’isolement et à la surstimulation dans de nouveaux environnements, des difficultés à établir des limites en raison d’un manque de compréhension des règles de conduite et des sujets appropriés sur le lieu de travail, du harcèlement de la part de collègues et une évolution de leurs identités sociales et professionnelles. Les participants ont rencontré des difficultés et ont accepté la révélation de leur identité autistique, tant à l’université que sur le lieu de travail, auprès de collègues et d’employeurs. Enfin, les participants ont formulé des recommandations aux employeurs sur la meilleure façon de soutenir leurs employés autistes. Les expériences partagées par les participants à cette étude ouvriront la voie à la compréhension et au recentrage des priorités de recherche afin de doter les jeunes adultes autistes d’outils favorisant leur réussite.

Difficulties navigating adult social environments are associated with poorer outcomes for autistic adults. This study examines how autistic adults describe their social challenges and interactions within the context of their transition to adulthood through a series of semi-structured interviews. Seventeen autistic adults (18 and over, Mage = 26.7 years) were interviewed. Themes related to social interactions in education and the workplace were analysed. Data analysis was conducted through the theoretical framework of Critical Disability Theory and utilised reflexive thematic analysis. Participants expressed Difficulties with Initial Social Contact leading to isolation and overstimulation in new environments, difficulties creating Boundaries through lack of understanding of appropriate workplace decorum and topics, Bullying from co-workers and experiencing Growth in their social and professional identities. Participants struggled and embraced Disclosure of autistic identity both in college and in the workplace to co-workers and employers. Lastly, participants provided Employer Recommendations on how to best support their autistic employees. The experiences shared by the participants in this study will pave the way for understanding and re-centring of research priorities to endow young autistic adults with tools for success.
