Résumé

Résumé Contexte Peu de recherches ont exploré les expériences d’adultes autistes se remémorant rétrospectivement la préparation qu’ils ont reçue (ou non) à l’âge adulte. La présente étude explore, au moyen d’entretiens semi-structurés, les expériences de jeunes adultes autistes lors de leur transition vers les responsabilités et les défis de l’âge adulte. Méthodes Dix-sept adultes autistes ont été interrogés (âge moyen = 26,7 ans). Les thèmes liés à la préparation à la transition vers l’âge adulte par les lycées et les familles ont été analysés. L’analyse des données a été menée à travers les cadres théoriques du Modèle social du handicap (Oliver, 1990) et de la Théorie de la transition (Schlossberg, 1981). Une analyse thématique réflexive (Braun & Clarke, 2024a, b) a été utilisée. Résultats Les participants ont rapporté des expériences constructives liées aux stratégies d’étude, au mentorat et à l’apprentissage des compétences de la vie quotidienne, qui les ont préparés à l’autonomie à l’âge adulte, ainsi que les expériences destructrices du découragement et des insultes provenant de personnes en position d’autorité, et la suppression forcée de leur moi authentique. Les participants se souvenaient avoir été sous-estimés et infantilisés. Les participants ont suggéré que les lycées proposent une préparation sociale spécifique, en mettant l’accent sur les compétences d’étude et la participation des familles à la préparation à la transition, et qu’ils offrent une psychoéducation aux familles. Enfin, les participants ont suggéré que les familles fassent preuve de compréhension, d’acceptation et d’honnêteté, et qu’elles offrent un soutien au fonctionnement exécutif. Conclusion Ce travail s’appuie sur des recherches antérieures sur les expériences des personnes autistes, principalement axées sur la préparation à l’emploi et à l’enseignement postsecondaire, tout en fournissant principalement des recommandations sur la manière dont les services de préparation peuvent être améliorés. Les résultats de cette étude fournissent des orientations concernant les prochaines étapes pour améliorer les ressources liées à la transition destinées aux adolescents autistes, aux familles et aux lycées afin de préparer cette prochaine étape cruciale de la vie.

Abstract Background Little research has explored the experiences of autistic adults retroactively recalling the preparation they did (or did not) receive for adulthood. The current study explores autistic young adults’ experiences transitioning into the responsibilities and challenges of adulthood through semi-structured interviews. Methods Seventeen autistic adults were interviewed (M age =26.7 years). Themes related to preparation for transitioning into adulthood from high schools and families were analyzed. Data analysis was conducted through the theoretical frameworks of the Social Model of Disability (Oliver, 1990) and Transition Theory (Schlossberg, 1981). Reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2024a, b) was used. Results Participants relayed Constructive Experiences surrounding Study Strategies, Mentorship, and Learning Life Skills in preparing them self-sufficiency in adulthood, the Destructive Experiences of Discouragement and Insults from people in positions of authority and forced Suppression of their authentic selves. Participants recalled being Underestimated and Infantilized. Participants suggested that high schools offer specific Social Preparation, emphasizing Study Skills and Family Involvement in transition preparation, and offering Psychoeducation to families. Lastly, participants suggested that families practice Understanding, Acceptance, Honesty, and offer Support for Executive Functioning. Conclusion This work builds on prior research of autistic individuals’ experiences by primarily focusing on preparation for employment and postsecondary education, in addition to providing primarily recommendations for how preparation services can be improved. The results from this study provide guidance on next steps for improving transition-related resources for autistic teens, families, and high schools in preparing for this critical next stage in life.
