Contexte : Bien qu’il n’existe aucune étude connue examinant les mères autistes qui travaillent, la recherche a montré que la gestion de l’emploi et de la maternité dans les populations non autistes présente des difficultés spécifiques, tout comme l’emploi dans les populations autistes. Cette étude dirigée par des personnes autistes visait à examiner l’expérience des mères autistes qui travaillent afin d’identifier les avantages, les difficultés et les besoins de soutien. Méthodes : Nous avons utilisé une perspective épistémologique subjectiviste pour connaître les expériences des mères autistes qui travaillent. Nous avons recruté 10 mères autistes qui travaillent, âgées de 34 à 50 ans, par le biais d’annonces sur les réseaux sociaux ; elles ont participé à un entretien semi-structuré de 45 à 60 minutes, au cours duquel nous avons posé des questions élaborées en consultation avec un groupe de référence communautaire. Nous avons transcrit les entretiens, puis les avons analysés au moyen d’une analyse thématique réflexive inductive. Résultats : Nous avons identifié trois thèmes clés. Le premier thème, « Bien-être : le travail me donne un but », examine la manière dont l’emploi soutient le bien-être mental. Le deuxième thème, « Difficultés : il est difficile d’être une mère autiste qui travaille », comprend les difficultés liées à l’équilibre entre le travail et la prise en charge, la culpabilité associée au fait d’être une mère qui travaille, et les problèmes liés au travail à temps partiel. Le troisième thème, « Le handicap invisible : tout le monde pense que j’ai l’air d’aller bien », examine le manque de compréhension des difficultés des participantes, les suppositions selon lesquelles elles s’en sortent, ainsi que le manque de soutiens qui a conduit certaines participantes à ne plus demander d’aide. Conclusions : Les réponses des femmes autistes ayant participé soutiennent l’idée que les mères autistes qui travaillent peuvent rencontrer certaines difficultés semblables à celles des mères non autistes qui travaillent, notamment le stress lié à la conciliation des rôles de prise en charge et de travail. Elles ont identifié des difficultés supplémentaires liées à leur genre et à leur identité autiste, notamment un manque de compréhension de la présentation féminine, ou « intériorisée », de l’autisme. Ces résultats aideront les mères autistes qui travaillent en favorisant une meilleure compréhension de leurs expériences et de leurs difficultés lorsqu’elles s’adressent à des professionnels de santé, aux pouvoirs publics et aux employeurs pour obtenir du soutien et des aménagements.
