Tout le monde est affecté par l'environnement bâti, la qualité de l'environnement intérieur (IEQ) étant liée au confort, à la productivité, à la santé et au bien-être. Il est largement rapporté que les personnes autistes présentent des différences dans leur manière de traiter les informations sensorielles par rapport aux personnes neurotypiques, indépendamment de l'âge ou du QI. Cependant, les recherches systématiques reliant ces deux domaines sont limitées, et les travaux existants portent principalement sur les enfants dans des environnements éducatifs. Une étude antérieure réalisée dans le cadre du mémoire de Master of Building Science de l'auteur a examiné l'effet de l'IEQ sur les adultes autistes dans l'ensemble de l'environnement bâti. Bien que les facteurs d'éclairage électrique aient été évalués négativement par les adultes autistes dans cette ressource clé, elle ne pouvait pas fournir d'informations spécifiques sur les types de systèmes d'éclairage, les configurations, etc., qui causaient des problèmes. Il n'était pas non plus possible d'attribuer les problèmes liés à l'éclairage électrique à des types spécifiques de bâtiments. Cette recherche est une exploration approfondie des perceptions qu'ont les personnes autistes des systèmes d'éclairage électrique intérieur dans leur environnement bâti quotidien, au moyen d'une conception de recherche participative à méthodes mixtes utilisant un journal photographique. Les participants autistes (n=13) ont été invités à prendre des photographies d'éclairage intérieur au cours de deux semaines et à les envoyer à l'aide d'un formulaire de retour en ligne. Un questionnaire de suivi direct ultérieur a été utilisé afin de clarifier et d'approfondir l'analyse initiale des données. Les données recueillies constituaient un mélange détaillé et descriptif de photographies visuelles, d'échelles d'évaluation et de commentaires textuels. Les participants pouvaient sélectionner eux-mêmes ce qu'ils jugeaient important de soumettre sous forme de photographies. Par conséquent, des données riches ont été recueillies. Les participants ont soumis des photographies prises dans un large éventail de lieux, comportant de nombreux exemples de différents systèmes d'éclairage. En général, les problèmes négatifs étaient plus nombreux que les effets positifs dans les thèmes issus de l'analyse des données, plus de la moitié des photographies soumises représentant un éclairage que les participants n'aimaient pas, un quart étant neutres et un quart appréciées. Quatre thèmes ont été identifiés : les attributs de l'éclairage (y compris l'emplacement, la configuration du système d'éclairage, les formes, les types et le nombre de lampes), les facteurs techniques (y compris le scintillement, le bruit, la couleur, l'éblouissement, la luminosité, les ombres/motifs, les reflets et la commande), les réactions à l'éclairage (physiques et émotionnelles) et le langage descriptif. L'utilisation d'une méthode de photographie participative a également permis de recueillir des données d'une manière nouvelle et adaptée afin d'être accessible aux participants autistes. Les limites de la recherche comprennent l'exigence d'un accès numérique et l'utilisation d'un suivi fondé sur un questionnaire. Cette recherche a également été menée dans le contexte de la pandémie de COVID-19, la collecte des données ayant eu lieu à la fin de 2019 et le suivi au début de 2020, alors que les confinements commençaient en Nouvelle-Zélande. Cette recherche offre de nombreuses pistes pour de futures recherches visant à créer des environnements intérieurs plus accessibles. Celles-ci comprennent la conception d'un éclairage électrique procurant du confort dans des environnements spécifiques tels que les salles d'attente médicales et les espaces communautaires, les préférences concernant la température de couleur de l'éclairage, la nécessité d'une compréhension technique des paramètres du scintillement pour les personnes autistes, particulièrement concernant les LED à intensité variable, l'étude des effets positifs de l'éclairage, la compréhension des problèmes liés à l'éclairage linéaire disposé en réseau, et la manière dont les personnes décrivent l'éclairage qu'elles aiment et n'aiment pas.
