Bien que des recherches antérieures aient examiné une réactivité sensorielle altérée chez les personnes autistes, aucune attention spécifique n'a été accordée aux expériences sensorielles visuelles, en particulier chez les adultes. En utilisant des méthodes qualitatives, cette étude visait à caractériser les symptômes sensoriels visuels autistiques, à contextualiser leur impact et à documenter les stratégies d'adaptation associées. Au total, 18 adultes autistes ont participé à quatre groupes de discussion comprenant des questions sur les expériences visuelles, leur impact sur la vie quotidienne et les stratégies visant à les réduire. Les transcriptions de chaque séance ont fait l'objet d'une analyse thématique, qui a permis d'identifier six thèmes clés. Les participants ont décrit une gamme d'hypersensibilités visuelles, notamment à la lumière, au mouvement, aux motifs et à certaines couleurs, qui contribuaient à la distraction et faisaient fréquemment partie d'une problématique multisensorielle plus large. Ces expériences ont eu des répercussions négatives importantes sur le bien-être personnel et la vie quotidienne, les participants décrivant de la fatigue, du stress et des entraves aux activités quotidiennes (p. ex., les déplacements et les activités sociales). Toutefois, le degré de compréhension que les participants avaient de leurs expériences visuelles influençait leur réponse émotionnelle, une meilleure compréhension réduisant l'inquiétude. Les participants ont utilisé diverses stratégies d'adaptation pour surmonter les expériences sensorielles visuelles, mais avec un succès variable. Les discussions ont également mis en évidence qu'il pourrait exister une faible compréhension publique des problèmes sensoriels dans l'autisme, ce qui affecte la capacité des personnes autistes à gérer leurs symptômes sensoriels. En résumé, les adultes autistes ont exprimé une préoccupation importante concernant leurs expériences visuelles, et il est nécessaire d'améliorer la compréhension des expériences visuelles à un niveau personnel et public, ainsi que de développer un soutien potentiel.
