Résumé
Contexte : La recherche sur les expériences des parents autistes est limitée, la majorité des études existantes portant sur la grossesse, l'accouchement et l'éducation des nourrissons. Nous avons cherché à recueillir les expériences des parents autistes tout au long du parcours allant de la grossesse à l'éducation d'enfants adultes. Méthodes : Nous avons mené des entretiens en ligne semi-structurés avec 92 parents autistes à toutes les étapes du parcours parental. Les participants ont été invités à partager leurs réflexions sur les défis et les forces de la parentalité en tant que personne autiste. Les données ont été analysées à l'aide d'une analyse qualitative de contenu, combinant un codage déductif et inductif. Résultats : Les défis externes à la relation parent-enfant ont été le plus fréquemment codés dans les catégories « soutien » et « discrimination/stigmatisation ». Les défis internes à la relation parent-enfant ont été le plus fréquemment codés dans les catégories « équilibre entre soi et l'enfant » et « bien-être parental ». Lors de l'exploration des forces parentales, les catégories les plus fréquemment codées étaient « empathie et compréhension » et « joie parentale ». Dans les trois domaines d'intérêt, la majorité des codes les plus fréquents provenaient du codage inductif et n'étaient pas représentés dans la littérature existante. Conclusion : Les défis externes à la relation parent-enfant les plus importants étaient le manque d'accès à des soutiens appropriés et la fourniture de soutiens inappropriés, ainsi que la discrimination de la part des professionnels et des prestataires de services. Le défi interne le plus fréquemment codé était le sentiment de ne pas être à la hauteur ou d'échouer en tant que parent, reflétant probablement les jugements négatifs vécus par de nombreuses personnes autistes. Les participants ont déclaré éprouver une grande joie dans leur expérience parentale et ont mis en évidence un éventail de forces, notamment une parentalité égalitaire, une communication ouverte et honnête, ainsi que de la perspicacité et de la compréhension.
