Résumé

Les difficultés de sommeil sont très fréquentes chez les personnes autistes tout au long de leur vie et constituent une préoccupation importante pour ces personnes, ainsi que pour les parents/proches aidants. Ces difficultés ont été exacerbées par la pandémie de COVID-19, et les effets à long terme ne sont pas clairs et devraient être surveillés. Malgré des progrès considérables, les troubles du sommeil continuent d'être sous-diagnostiqués et non traités chez les jeunes autistes. Les problèmes de sommeil rencontrés par les jeunes autistes diffèrent souvent de ceux observés dans les groupes neurotypiques en termes de présentation et d'approches thérapeutiques, ce qui souligne le besoin urgent de parcours diagnostiques validés spécifiques à l'autisme ainsi que de traitements personnalisés adaptés à leur groupe d'âge. Une étape vers le progrès consiste à intégrer des dépistages du sommeil comme élément systématique des soins de santé pour les personnes autistes à différents stades de développement, car les problèmes de sommeil pendant l'enfance peuvent différer de ceux observés à l'adolescence et à l'âge adulte. Les recherches futures dans ce domaine devraient viser à établir des partenariats de recherche communautaires avec des personnes autistes et des parents-proches aidants afin de maximiser les bénéfices des recherches futures pour la communauté. Un effort collaboratif est nécessaire pour répondre à leurs pratiques distinctes d'hygiène du sommeil et à leurs besoins uniques, qui semblent différer de ceux de la population générale. Par ce commentaire coproduit, nous visons à contribuer au dialogue en cours sur les difficultés de sommeil chez les jeunes autistes, en favorisant une approche collaborative afin d'améliorer la compréhension de ces troubles, de leur diagnostic et de la manière dont des traitements adaptés peuvent être disponibles. Résumé grand public Les personnes autistes rencontrent souvent des difficultés de sommeil qui persistent tout au long de leur vie, suscitant des préoccupations pour les personnes qui les vivent et leurs familles/proches aidants. La pandémie de COVID-19 a accru ces difficultés, avec des effets à long terme incertains. Malgré les progrès, les troubles du sommeil chez les jeunes autistes restent sous-diagnostiqués et non traités. Leurs problèmes de sommeil peuvent différer de ceux de leurs pairs neurotypiques, ce qui met l'accent sur la nécessité de solutions adaptées. Des dépistages réguliers du sommeil et des partenariats de recherche collaboratifs sont des étapes essentielles pour comprendre leurs besoins uniques en matière de sommeil et y répondre.

Sleep difficulties are highly prevalent in autistic individuals throughout their lifespan and are a substantial concern for these individuals, as well as parents/caregivers. These difficulties have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the long-term effects are unclear and should be monitored. Despite considerable progress, sleep disorders continue to be underdiagnosed and left untreated in autistic youth. The sleep issues faced by autistic youth often differ from those experienced by neurotypical groups in presentation and treatment approaches, underscoring the urgent need for autism-specific validated diagnostic pathways as well as personalized treatments tailored to their age group. A step towards progress entails incorporating sleep screenings as a routine part of healthcare for autistic individuals at various developmental stages as sleep issues during childhood may differ from those in adolescence and adulthood. Future research in this area should aim to engage in community-based research partnerships with autistic individuals and parent-caregivers to maximize the benefits of future research for the community. A collaborative effort is necessary to address their distinct sleep hygiene practices and unique needs, which appear to differ from the general population. Through this co-produced commentary, we aim to contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding sleep difficulties in autistic youth, fostering a collaborative approach to improve understanding of these disturbances, their diagnosis, and how tailored treatments may be available. Lay Abstract Autistic individuals often face sleep difficulties that persist across their lives, causing concern for those experiencing them and their families/caregivers. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened these challenges, with unclear long-term effects. Despite progress, sleep disorders in autistic youth are still underdiagnosed and untreated. Their sleep problems may differ from neurotypical peers, emphasizing the need for tailored solutions. Regular sleep screenings and collaborative research partnerships are essential steps in understanding and addressing their unique sleep needs.
