Des recherches récentes ont montré qu'il est rapporté que les enfants autistes ont une fréquentation scolaire plus faible que les élèves non autistes. La non-fréquentation scolaire peut survenir pour de multiples raisons, notamment la participation à des rendez-vous médicaux/de santé et le refus scolaire/l'évitement scolaire fondé sur les émotions. Fournir un soutien pour améliorer la fréquentation scolaire des enfants autistes nécessite de comprendre les facteurs qui conduisent potentiellement à des types spécifiques de non-fréquentation scolaire ou les influencent. L'objectif de cette étude était d'identifier les facteurs scolaires, familiaux et liés à l'enfant, concomitants et longitudinaux, associés à la non-fréquentation scolaire chez les enfants autistes. Les parents/aidants ayant précédemment participé à une étude longitudinale de 6 ans en Australie ont été invités à remplir un questionnaire de suivi en ligne concernant la fréquentation scolaire de leur enfant. Soixante-dix-sept parents d'enfants autistes âgés de 11 à 14 ans ont participé. Plus de 40 % des enfants présentaient une absence persistante (> 10 % des jours) de l'école. Sur la base de modèles de régression binomiale négative multivariés, l'anxiété de l'enfant était un prédicteur significatif des jours manqués pour plusieurs types de non-fréquentation scolaire. D'autres facteurs, notamment les différences de traitement sensoriel de l'enfant, les difficultés comportementales et émotionnelles de l'enfant, le stress parental, le revenu familial et l'emploi des parents, étaient corrélés à des types spécifiques d'absence. L'anxiété de l'enfant était le prédicteur longitudinal le plus fort et le plus constant, une anxiété plus élevée chez l'enfant prédisant significativement davantage de jours de non-fréquentation scolaire 3, 4 et 6 ans plus tard. Les résultats soulignent l'importance de prendre en considération les facteurs scolaires, liés à l'enfant et familiaux spécifiques aux différents types de non-fréquentation scolaire afin de soutenir les enfants autistes. Identifier les facteurs qui conduisent à l'anxiété de l'enfant et prévenir/réduire précocement l'anxiété de l'enfant constitue une piste potentiellement prometteuse pour soutenir la fréquentation scolaire.
