Consideree comme un sujet tabou dans de nombreuses societes, la menopause chez les femmes autistes reste sous-reconnue, et peu de recherches abordent son impact. Les etudes existantes suggerent que cette periode de transition souvent difficile est associee a de nombreux besoins de sante non satisfaits ainsi qu'a un manque frustrant de connaissances et de soutien de la part des professionnels de sante. Les symptomes vasomoteurs menopausiques, caracteristiques de la menopause, peuvent intensifier et aggraver les sensibilites sensorielles chez de nombreuses femmes autistes. Nous presentons le cas d'une femme autiste caucasienne de 53 ans, sans deficience intellectuelle ni autres comorbidites psychiatriques actuelles. La patiente a subi des analyses de laboratoire gynecologiques et hormonales, et a commence un traitement hormonal substitutif afin d'ameliorer les symptomes de carence en oestradiol et en progesterone. Les symptomes vasomoteurs menopausiques ressentis par la patiente ont ete surveilles pendant une periode de sept mois apres la mise en place du traitement hormonal substitutif et d'approches non pharmacologiques. Le traitement hormonal substitutif a reduit les symptomes vasomoteurs menopausiques, mais pas toutes ses plaintes initiales. De forts problemes sensoriels etaient lies a des symptomes vasomoteurs menopausiques plus severes. Ce cas souligne la necessite de recherches supplementaires et du developpement du modele mondial Extension for Community Health Outcomes (ECHO) Autism® afin de faire progresser les soins medicaux proposes aux femmes autistes pendant la menopause.

Considered a taboo topic in many societies, menopause in autistic women is still under-recognised, and little research addresses its impact. Existing studies suggest that this often-difficult transition period is associated with numerous unmet health needs and a frustrating lack of knowledge and support from healthcare professionals. Menopausal vasomotor symptoms, the hallmark of menopause, can intensify and worsen sensory sensitivities in many autistic women. We present the case of a 53-year-old Caucasian autistic woman without intellectual disability or other current psychiatric comorbidities. The patient underwent gynaecologic and hormonal lab testing, and was introduced to hormone replacement therapy to ameliorate symptoms of oestradiol and progesterone deficiency. Menopausal vasomotor symptoms experienced by the patient were monitored over a period of seven months following the implementation of hormone replacement therapy and non-pharmacologic approaches. Hormone replacement therapy decreased menopausal vasomotor symptoms, but not all her initial complains. Strong sensory issues were linked to more severe menopausal vasomotor symptoms. This case highlights the need for further research and the development of the global Extension for Community Health Outcomes (ECHO) Autism® model to advance medical care offered to autistic women during menopause.
