Résumé

La neurodiversité reconnaît les variations riches et diverses parmi les humains. Elle est à la fois une manière de comprendre la diversité large et attendue des humains et un mouvement sociopolitique exigeant que les systèmes passent de la pathologisation au soutien des différences. Elle constitue un fondement de la santé mentale et du bien-être à l’échelle de la population australienne, compte tenu de l’interconnexion des différences sociales, de communication, de régulation émotionnelle et d’autres neurodifférences, ainsi que de la relation entre l’individu et la manière dont il vit son environnement. En effet, le contexte socioculturel australien actuel (par exemple, National Autism Strategy, National Roadmap to Improve the Health and Mental Health of Autistic People 2025–2035, et la récente version révisée par le Psychology Board of Australia des Professional competencies for psychologists) souligne l’importance des approches affirmant la neurodiversité pour des soins de santé mentale appropriés, efficaces et équitables. Les chercheurs, psychologues, décideurs politiques, cliniciens et membres de la communauté ont désormais l’occasion d’adopter des représentations de la différence de plus en plus normalisées comme une occasion importante de faire progresser la promotion nationale de la santé mentale publique. Nous proposons un engagement en faveur d’actions qui reconnaissent les manifestations individuelles et promeuvent des environnements créant les conditions nécessaires pour faire progresser la santé mentale à l’échelle de la population australienne.

Neurodiversity recognises the rich and diverse variations among humans. It is both a way of understanding the broad and expected diversity of humans and a socio-political movement demanding that systems shift from pathologising to supporting differences. It is a foundation for mental health and wellbeing at the Australian population level, given the interconnectedness of social, communication, emotional regulation, and other neurodifferences, and the relationship between the individual and the way in which they experience the environment. Indeed, current Australian socio-cultural context (e.g. National Autism Strategy, National Roadmap to Improve the Health and Mental Health of Autistic People 2025–2035, and the recent Psychology Board of Australia revised Professional competencies for psychologists) emphasises the importance of neurodiversity‑affirming approaches for appropriate, effective and equitable mental health care. There is now the opportunity for researchers, psychologists, policy-makers, clinicians, and community members to embrace increasingly normalised representations of difference as an important opportunity to advance national public mental health promotion. We propose commitment to action that recognises individual presentations and promotes environments that create conditions to advance mental health at the Australian population level.
