Résumé

Contexte : Des chercheurs ont propose que le camouflage contribue a un diagnostic retarde ou absent ainsi qu'a des problemes de sante mentale chez les personnes autistes. Il est donc necessaire de disposer de mesures validees de ce construit. Cette etude visait a adapter culturellement le Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q) a la population espagnole (Espagne) et a evaluer ses proprietes psychometriques, afin de repondre au besoin d'outils d'evaluation du camouflage en Espagne. Methodes : Nous avons mene un processus d'adaptation culturelle, comprenant une traduction directe-retour et un pretest avec des personnes autistes. Nous avons teste la coherence interne, la fiabilite test-retest, la validite de construit, y compris la validite structurelle (analyse factorielle confirmatoire), l'invariance de mesure et la verification d'hypotheses pour la validite de construit, avec un echantillon plus large de 490 participants, comprenant 379 personnes non autistes et 111 personnes autistes. Nous avons evalue un sous-echantillon de 32 participants non autistes pour la fiabilite test-retest. Resultats : Le processus d'adaptation culturelle a abouti a la version espagnole (ES) du CAT-Q, adaptee culturellement a la population espagnole. Des volontaires autistes ont identifie des problemes mineurs de comprehension dans trois items et les chercheurs les ont revises. Le CAT-Q-ES a montre une excellente coherence interne chez les personnes non autistes (omega de McDonald [ω] = 0.95) et les personnes autistes (ω = 0.89). Les sous-echelles (Compensation, Masquage, Assimilation) ont presente des coherences internes allant d'adequates a excellentes. La fiabilite test-retest a montre une forte relation (r = 0.99, p < 0.001). Les associations entre les scores du CAT-Q-ES et des construits associes, y compris les traits autistiques ainsi que les symptomes d'anxiete et de depression, ont confirme sa validite, les personnes autistes obtenant des scores plus eleves au test. Conclusion : Le CAT-Q-ES est conceptuellement et semantiquement equivalent a l'instrument original, offrant une mesure valide et fiable du camouflage chez les adultes espagnols. Ces resultats ameliorent l'evaluation et la comprehension du camouflage dans le contexte espagnol, comblant une lacune cruciale dans le domaine.

Background: Researchers have proposed that camouflaging contributes to delayed or absent diagnosis and mental health problems in autistic individuals. Therefore, there is a need for validated measures of this construct. This study aimed to culturally adapt the Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q) for the Spanish population (Spain) and assess its psychometric properties, addressing the need for camouflage assessment tools in Spain. Methods: We conducted a cultural adaptation process, which involved direct-back translation and pretest with autistic individuals. We tested internal consistency, test–retest reliability, construct validity, including structural validity (confirmatory factor analysis), measure invariance, and hypothesis testing for construct validity with a larger sample of 490 participants, including 379 non-autistic individuals and 111 autistic individuals. We assessed a subsample of 32 non-autistic participants for test–retest reliability. Results: The cultural adaptation process yielded the CAT-Q–Spanish version (ES), culturally adapted for the Spanish population. Autistic volunteers identified minor comprehension issues in three items and the researchers revised them. The CAT-Q-ES showed excellent internal consistency among non-autistic (McDonald’s omega [ω] = 0.95) and autistic individuals (ω = 0.89). The subscales (Compensation, Masking, Assimilation) demonstrated internal consistencies ranging from adequate to excellent. Test–retest reliability showed a strong relationship (r = 0.99, p < 0.001). Associations between CAT-Q-ES scores and related constructs, including autistic traits, and symptoms of anxiety and depression confirmed its validity, with autistic individuals scoring higher on the test. Conclusion: The CAT-Q-ES is conceptually and semantically equivalent to the original instrument, offering a valid and reliable measure of camouflage for Spanish adults. These findings enhance the assessment and understanding of camouflage within the Spanish context, addressing a crucial gap in the field.
