Les intérêts spécifiques sont fréquemment développés par les personnes présentant un trouble du spectre de l’autisme et s’expriment sous la forme d’une focalisation intense sur des sujets particuliers. Les personnes neurotypiques développent également des intérêts spécifiques, souvent sous la forme de passe-temps. Bien que les recherches antérieures se soient concentrées sur les intérêts spécifiques des enfants présentant un trouble du spectre de l’autisme, leur rôle à l’âge adulte reste peu connu. La présente étude a examiné les différences dans le contenu, le nombre et la spécificité des intérêts spécifiques détenus par des adultes présentant un trouble du spectre de l’autisme et par des personnes neurotypiques, en utilisant des forums de discussion Internet comme source de données. Une analyse quantitative des messages de forum a révélé des différences significatives entre les groupes diagnostiques. Les personnes présentant un trouble du spectre de l’autisme ont déclaré avoir davantage d’intérêts dans des domaines de systématisation, des intérêts plus spécifiques et un plus grand nombre d’intérêts au total que les personnes neurotypiques. La compréhension des intérêts spécifiques peut conduire à l’élaboration de programmes éducatifs et thérapeutiques qui facilitent l’acquisition d’autres compétences sociales et de communication importantes.
