CONTEXTE : Malgré des données probantes croissantes étayant un chevauchement entre l’autisme et l’anorexie mentale (AN), les mécanismes sous-jacents restent mal compris. Les facteurs sociaux et sensoriels sont apparus comme des cibles prometteuses tant dans l’autisme que dans l’AN ; toutefois, il reste nécessaire de comparer ces différences entre les expériences de l’AN chez les personnes autistes et non autistes. S’appuyant sur des perspectives multiples dyadiques, cette étude a exploré les expériences des différences sociales et sensorielles chez des adultes autistes et non autistes ainsi que chez leurs parents et/ou aidants. MÉTHODES : À l’aide de l’analyse phénoménologique interprétative (IPA), des entretiens dyadiques ont été menés auprès de 14 dyades, comprenant sept dyades autistes et sept dyades non autistes. L’analyse des données a fait l’objet d’une triangulation des interprétations : (1) les participants eux-mêmes ; (2) un chercheur neurotypique ; (3) et un chercheur Autiste ayant une expérience vécue/actuelle de l’AN. RÉSULTATS : L’IPA a identifié trois thèmes dans chaque groupe, avec des similitudes et des différences entre les dyades autistes et non autistes. Des thèmes similaires ont été identifiés concernant l’importance du lien social et les difficultés socio-émotionnelles, ainsi qu’un manque commun de confiance dans le soi social et sensoriel et dans le corps. Les thèmes spécifiques à l’autisme étaient centrés sur des sentiments de « défectuosité » sociale, des divergences entre la perception et l’expression de certains signaux, et des différences de traitement multisensoriel tout au long de la vie. Les thèmes non autistes reflétaient les comparaisons sociales et le sentiment d’inadéquation, ainsi que des sensibilités à l’apprentissage des idéaux et des comportements au travers des expériences précoces. CONCLUSIONS : Bien que des similitudes aient été observées dans les deux groupes, il semblait exister des différences notables dans le rôle et l’influence perçus des différences sociales et sensorielles. Ces résultats pourraient avoir des implications importantes pour la mise en œuvre et la modification des interventions relatives aux troubles alimentaires. Plus précisément, ils suggèrent que, bien que les cibles thérapeutiques puissent sembler similaires, de subtiles différences dans les mécanismes sous-jacents et les approches pourraient être nécessaires pour les personnes Autistes souffrant d’AN dans les interventions fondées sur les aspects sensoriels, émotionnels et communicationnels.
