Résumé

Résumé Cette étude a examiné comment l'autisme affecte les relations entre les membres de la famille et l'unité familiale. Elle visait à fournir une compréhension qualitative plus approfondie en intégrant les perspectives d'adolescents autistes et des membres de leur famille, apportant une profondeur supplémentaire aux résultats quantitatifs existants. Cette étude qualitative comprenait des entretiens approfondis semi-structurés enregistrés en audio avec 40 participants, dont des mères, des pères, des frères et sœurs et des adolescents autistes, recrutés par l'intermédiaire d'organismes spécialisés dans l'autisme et le handicap à Canberra, en Australie. La collecte et l'analyse des données ont suivi une approche de théorisation ancrée constructiviste. La tenue d'un journal réflexif et la vérification itérative auprès des participants ont assuré l'exactitude et la validité des résultats. L'étude a révélé que l'autisme influençait significativement la dynamique familiale, entraînant des comportements tels que l'automutilation, l'anxiété, la surstimulation, la colère et une conscience sociale et émotionnelle limitée, qui mettaient à rude épreuve les relations familiales. Les familles ont signalé une augmentation du stress et des tensions, particulièrement en l'absence de soutien régulier et de répit. Malgré ces difficultés, les familles ont employé diverses stratégies pour maintenir des relations étroites et favoriser la résilience, telles que le partage de souvenirs, l'établissement de limites et la mise en place de routines. Les résultats positifs comprenaient une amélioration du travail d'équipe et un renforcement des liens. Les participants ont souligné l'importance de la patience, de la compréhension et de la résolution méthodique des problèmes pour maintenir une dynamique familiale cohésive. L'étude conclut que, bien que l'autisme pose des défis importants aux relations familiales, les familles peuvent développer des stratégies efficaces pour gérer ces défis et favoriser la résilience. Les résultats concordent avec la théorie de l'identité sociale, soulignant le rôle de la connexion familiale et de l'effet tampon social dans l'atténuation des impacts négatifs de l'autisme sur la famille. Des liens familiaux solides et un environnement de soutien sont essentiels pour réduire le stress et promouvoir une formation identitaire positive. Un soutien continu et des interventions ciblées sont essentiels pour améliorer la dynamique familiale et le bien-être des personnes autistes et de leurs familles.

Abstract This study investigated how autism impacts the relationships between family members and the family unit. It aimed to provide a deeper qualitative understanding by incorporating the perspectives of autistic adolescents and their family members, adding depth to existing quantitative findings. This qualitative study involved audio-recorded semi-structured in-depth interviews with 40 participants, including mothers, fathers, siblings, and autistic adolescents, recruited through autism and disability agencies in Canberra, Australia. Data collection and analysis followed a constructivist grounded theory approach. Reflexive journaling and iterative member checking ensured the accuracy and validity of the findings. The study found that autism significantly influenced family dynamics, leading to behaviors such as self-harm, anxiety, overstimulation, anger, and limited social and emotional awareness, which strained family relationships. Families reported increased stress and tension, particularly in the absence of regular support and respite. Despite these challenges, families employed various strategies to maintain close relationships and foster resilience, such as sharing memories, setting boundaries, and establishing routines. Positive outcomes included improved teamwork and strengthened bonds. Participants emphasized the importance of patience, understanding, and methodical problem-solving in maintaining a cohesive family dynamic. The study concludes that while autism poses significant challenges to family relationships, families can develop effective strategies to manage these challenges and foster resilience. The findings align with social identity theory, highlighting the role of family connectedness and social buffering in mitigating the negative impacts of autism on the family. Strong family bonds and a supportive environment are crucial for reducing stress and promoting positive identity formation. Continued support and targeted interventions are essential for enhancing family dynamics and improving the well-being of autistic individuals and their families.
