RÉSUMÉ Objectif L'autisme et les troubles des conduites alimentaires (TCA) coexistent fréquemment, en particulier chez les femmes. Les personnes autistes ne sont souvent pas diagnostiquées lorsqu'elles se présentent aux services de santé mentale, et nombreuses sont celles qui reçoivent leur diagnostic d'autisme pendant ou après un traitement des TCA. Cette étude visait à comprendre les expériences de femmes autistes présentant une anorexie mentale (AN) concomitante et recevant un diagnostic d'autisme. Méthode Une analyse secondaire de données a été menée sur 17 entretiens semi-structurés avec des femmes autistes présentant une AN, au moyen d'une analyse thématique réflexive. Les participantes avaient un diagnostic d'autisme, une expérience actuelle ou passée d'AN, s'identifiaient comme femmes et étaient âgées de 18 ans ou plus. Résultats Les participantes ont vécu des occasions manquées de diagnostic d'autisme, ainsi que des erreurs de diagnostic et des incompréhensions de la part des professionnels de santé. Les participantes avaient tendance à recevoir leur diagnostic au moment d'une crise et faisaient l'expérience d'être orientées de manière répétée entre les services d'autisme et les services de TCA. Recevoir un diagnostic a aidé les participantes à donner un sens à leurs expériences et à reprendre le contrôle de leur vie, mais a également suscité des sentiments de choc et de détresse. Conclusions Bien que le diagnostic d'autisme soit souvent une expérience positive pour les femmes autistes présentant une AN, diverses émotions peuvent être éprouvées. Les résultats soulignent la nécessité d'une identification meilleure et plus précoce de l'autisme chez les femmes présentant des TCA, ainsi que d'un soutien approprié après le diagnostic et d'un traitement des TCA adapté aux besoins des personnes autistes.

ABSTRACT Objective Autism and eating disorders (ED) frequently co‐occur, particularly in women. Autistic individuals are often undiagnosed when they present to mental health services and many receive their autism diagnosis during or after ED treatment. This study sought to understand the experiences of autistic women with co‐occurring anorexia nervosa (AN) receiving an autism diagnosis. Method Secondary data analysis was conducted on 17 semi‐structured interviews with autistic women with AN using reflexive thematic analysis. Participants had a diagnosis of autism, had current or past experience of AN, were female‐identifying and aged 18 or above. Results Participants experienced missed opportunities for autism diagnosis along with misdiagnoses and misunderstandings from healthcare professionals. Participants tended to receive their diagnosis at the point of crisis and experienced being passed between autism and ED services. Receiving a diagnosis helped participants make sense of their experiences and take control of their lives but also brought feelings of shock and distress. Conclusions While autism diagnosis is often a positive experience for autistic women with AN, a range of emotions can be experienced. The findings highlight a need for better and earlier identification of autism among women with EDs, alongside appropriate post‐diagnosis support and ED treatment that is adapted to autistic individuals' needs.
