Résumé

Contexte : Le stimming autistique (p. ex., mouvements ou vocalisations répétitifs) est souvent mal compris ou pathologisé dans les discours cliniques et publics. Cette étude explore la manière dont des adultes autistes perçoivent et vivent le stimming, y compris sa signification personnelle, son importance émotionnelle, ses dimensions sociales et son rôle dans l'identité. Nous examinons les perspectives tant sur son propre stimming que sur le stimming observé chez autrui, en allant au-delà des cadres comportementaux réducteurs afin de comprendre ses rôles multidimensionnels dans la vie des personnes autistes. Dans cette étude, nous avons exploré comment des adultes autistes perçoivent et vivent le stimming dans leur vie quotidienne. Méthodes : Nous avons utilisé un cadre participatif qualitatif multimodal pour mener des entretiens Zoom semi-structurés avec 15 adultes autistes issus de milieux divers et intersectionnels. Les personnes chargées des entretiens ont communiqué à l'avance les thèmes possibles et ont soutenu la communication multimodale au cours des séances. Nous avons analysé les données à l'aide d'une approche séquentielle intégrée combinant l'analyse de cadre et l'analyse thématique réflexive. Résultats : Nous avons identifié trois thèmes principaux : (1) Identité et perception de soi du stimming, qui décrivait le stimming comme central à la reconnaissance de soi et au développement de l'identité. (2) Naviguer entre sécurité et confiance, qui mettait en évidence la manière dont les participants masquaient les stims comme une décision stratégique. (3) Le stimming comme connexion et communication, qui illustrait les dimensions relationnelles et communicationnelles du stimming. Les participants ont décrit le stimming comme essentiel à la régulation émotionnelle, au traitement cognitif et à l'expression authentique de soi. Ils ont également indiqué que leur volonté et leur ouverture à faire du stimming dépendaient de leurs perceptions de la sécurité et de l'acceptation sociale. Dans des environnements dépourvus de ces conditions, les participants masquaient leur identité et la divulguaient de manière sélective. Conclusions : Nos résultats situent le stimming comme une expression multidimensionnelle ancrée dans l'identité et la socialité autistes. Sur la base de ces perspectives, nous appelons à des interventions, des soutiens et des récits qui reconnaissent les fonctions expressives et relationnelles du stimming. Cette étude met également en évidence la valeur des méthodes de recherche participatives pour saisir les expériences vécues nuancées des personnes autistes.

Background: Autistic stimming (e.g., repetitive movements or vocalizations) is often misunderstood or pathologized in clinical and public discourse. This study explores how Autistic adults perceive and experience stimming, including its personal meaning, emotional significance, social dimensions, and role in identity. We examine perspectives on both one’s own stimming and stimming observed in others, moving beyond reductive behavioral framings to understand its multidimensional roles in Autistic life. In this study, we explored how Autistic adults perceive and experience stimming in their daily lives. Methods: We used a multimodal participatory-qualitative framework to conduct semistructured Zoom interviews with 15 Autistic adults from diverse, intersectional backgrounds. Interviewers shared possible topics in advance and supported multimodal communication during sessions. We analyzed the data using an integrated sequential approach that combined framework analysis with reflexive thematic analysis. Results: We identified three primary themes: (1) Identity and Self-Perception of Stimming, which described stimming as central to self-recognition and identity development. (2) Navigating Safety and Trust, which highlighted how participants masked stims as a strategic decision. (3) Stimming as Connection and Communication, which illustrated the relational and communicative dimensions of stimming. Participants described stimming as essential to emotional regulation, cognitive processing, and authentic self-expression. They also reported that their willingness and openness to stim depended on their perceptions of safety and social acceptance. In environments lacking these conditions, participants masked and selectively disclosed their identities. Conclusions: Our findings position stimming as a multidimensional expression embedded within Autistic identity and sociality. Based on these insights, we call for interventions, supports, and narratives that affirm stimming’s expressive and relational functions. This study also highlights the value of participatory research methods in capturing the nuanced lived experiences of Autistic people.
