Résumé
Un ratio de diagnostics d'autisme de 3:1 entre hommes et femmes peut être en partie expliqué par des comportements de camouflage plus fréquents chez les femmes, qui peuvent masquer les traits autistiques. Méthodes : Cette étude par méthodes mixtes a examiné les différences de genre dans le camouflage chez 110 adultes autistes (âgés de 18 à 64 ans) à l'aide du Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q) et a exploré les expériences vécues au moyen d'entretiens avec huit participants (âgés de 18 à 37 ans). Résultats : Les résultats quantitatifs ont montré que les femmes rapportaient des scores totaux de camouflage significativement plus élevés que les hommes, en particulier dans le sous-type de compensation, tandis que les différences en matière de masquage et d'assimilation n'étaient pas significatives. L'analyse thématique des entretiens a identifié quatre thèmes généraux clés : les motivations et les conséquences du camouflage, le niveau de conscience, l'identité affectée et les expériences de soutien. Conclusions : Les résultats soulignent l'impact complexe du camouflage sur la vie quotidienne et son rôle potentiel dans les diagnostics tardifs et les difficultés de santé mentale. Les recherches futures devraient inclure diverses identités de genre et une représentation plus large du spectre de l'autisme afin d'éclairer de meilleurs soutiens et interventions.
