Résumé

Les tâches réalisées en laboratoire suggèrent que les personnes autistes ont une capacité perceptive accrue (c.-à-d. qu’elles traitent davantage d’informations à un moment donné) par rapport aux personnes non autistes. Ici, nous avons exploré si cette augmentation se reflète dans les expériences perceptives quotidiennes des personnes autistes et, par comparaison avec les personnes ayant un TDAH/les personnes neurotypiques, si les similitudes/divergences dans ces expériences peuvent éclairer les différences entre neurotypes. Des adultes résidant au Royaume-Uni (108 autistes, 40 avec un TDAH, 79 autistes avec un TDAH, 85 neurotypiques) ont répondu à une enquête en ligne sur les expériences d’attention et de distraction. Les réponses ont été analysées au moyen d’une analyse thématique. Nous avons constaté que les participants de tous les neurotypes connaissaient des périodes de concentration intense. Les participants neurodivergents ont rapporté ressentir un flot d’informations ; les participants autistes le trouvaient accablant, tandis que ceux ayant un TDAH faisaient référence à une surcharge. Ce résultat pourrait refléter une capacité perceptive accrue chez les personnes autistes (conférant une validité écologique aux résultats antérieurs concernant l’augmentation de la capacité perceptive autistique), par opposition aux difficultés à maintenir les priorités attentionnelles chez les personnes ayant un TDAH. Bien que des différences entre les personnes neurodivergentes et neurotypiques aient été manifestes, les écarts entre les expériences des groupes neurodivergents étaient plus subtils, ce qui suggère que la capacité perceptive accrue pourrait s’étendre au-delà de l’autisme. Par conséquent, la capacité perceptive offre un cadre utile pour favoriser une meilleure compréhension de ses propres expériences perceptives et pour orienter les stratégies visant à atténuer les difficultés rencontrées.

Lab-based tasks suggest autistic people have increased perceptual capacity (i.e. process more information at any one time) compared to non-autistic people. Here, we explored whether this increase is reflected in autistic people's day-to-day perceptual experiences and, when compared to those with ADHD/neurotypical people, whether commonalities/divergences in these experiences can illuminate differences between neurotypes. UK-based adults (108 autistic, 40 with ADHD, 79 autistic with ADHD, 85 neurotypical) completed an online survey about experiences of attention and distraction. Responses were analysed using thematic analysis. We found that participants of all neurotypes experienced periods of intense focus. Neurodivergent participants reported experiencing a barrage of information; autistic participants found this overwhelming, whereas those with ADHD referred to overload. This finding may reflect increased perceptual capacity for autistic people (adding ecological validity to previous findings regarding increased autistic perceptual capacity) vs. difficulties maintaining attentional priorities for those with ADHD. While differences between neurodivergent and neurotypical people were evident, discrepancies between experiences of neurodivergent groups were more subtle, suggesting that increased perceptual capacity may extend beyond autism. Consequently, perceptual capacity offers a useful framework to promote better understanding of one's own perceptual experiences, and to guide strategies to ameliorate any challenges encountered.
