Résumé

L'autisme est une affection développementale qui peut être détectée durant la petite enfance. Une intervention précoce peut améliorer les résultats, bien que de nombreux enfants ne soient pas identifiés avant d'atteindre l'école primaire. Les éducateurs de la petite enfance sont bien placés pour suivre le développement des enfants et identifier ceux qui pourraient bénéficier de soutiens supplémentaires, bien que la mise en oeuvre d'outils et de processus standardisés soit limitée. Le National Disability Insurance Scheme en Australie a accru la responsabilité des éducateurs d'aider les familles à accéder à des services financés. Un atelier sur les pratiques éclairées par les données probantes en matière de détection précoce de l'autisme a été proposé à des professionnels de la petite enfance. La théorie des architectures de la pratique a orienté l'élaboration et l'analyse d'enquêtes menées avant et après l'atelier afin d'explorer les changements dans les perspectives des éducateurs de la petite enfance concernant les facteurs influençant le suivi universel du développement et les orientations vers des soutiens d'intervention précoce à l'aide d'un outil fondé sur des données probantes, le Social Attention and Communication Surveillance-Revised (SACS-R). Des augmentations après l'atelier des connaissances perçues et de la confiance des éducateurs de la petite enfance sont évidentes, bien que de récentes réformes des politiques présentent des difficultés. La surveillance de la population à l'aide du SACS-R dans l'éducation de la petite enfance est efficace pour l'identification et l'orientation des enfants autistes, et le renforcement des capacités des professionnels à utiliser le SACS-R est recommandé.

Autism is a developmental condition that can be detected in early childhood. Early intervention can improve outcomes, though many children are not identified until they reach primary school. Early childhood educators are well placed to monitor children’s development and identify those who may benefit from additional supports, though implementation of standardised tools and processes is limited. The National Disability Insurance Scheme in Australia has increased the onus on educators to support families to access funded services. A workshop on evidence-informed practice in early detection for autism was provided for early childhood professionals. The theory of practice architectures informed development and analysis of pre- and post-workshop surveys to explore changes in early childhood educators’ perspectives on factors influencing universal developmental monitoring and referrals to early intervention supports using an evidence-based tool, the Social Attention and Communication Surveillance-Revised (SACS-R). Post-workshop increases in early childhood educators’ perceived knowledge and confidence are evident, though recent policy reforms present challenges. Population surveillance using SACS-R in early childhood education is effective for identification and referral for children who have autism, and capacity building for professionals to use SACS-R is recommended.
