Résumé L'importance de soutenir les interactions parent-enfant a été soulignée dans le contexte de l'autisme prodromique, mais peu d'attention a été accordée au rôle contributif possible des caractéristiques parentales, telles que la détresse psychologique. Cette étude transversale a testé des modèles dans lesquels des variables d'interaction parent-enfant jouaient un rôle médiateur dans les relations entre les caractéristiques parentales et le comportement autistique de l'enfant, dans un échantillon de familles dont le nourrisson présentait des signes précoces d'autisme (N = 103). Les résultats suggèrent que les associations entre les caractéristiques parentales (détresse psychologique ; détachement) et les comportements autistiques de l'enfant peuvent être médiatisées par l'inattention ou l'affect négatif de l'enfant au cours des interactions. Ces résultats ont des implications importantes pour l'élaboration et la mise en oeuvre d'interventions durant la petite enfance qui ciblent la synchronie de l'interaction parent-enfant dans le but de soutenir le développement de la communication sociale des enfants.

Abstract The importance of supporting parent-child interactions has been noted in the context of prodromal autism, but little consideration has been given to the possible contributing role of parental characteristics, such as psychological distress. This cross-sectional study tested models in which parent-child interaction variables mediated relations between parent characteristics and child autistic behaviour in a sample of families whose infant demonstrated early signs of autism (N = 103). The findings suggest that associations between parent characteristics (psychological distress; aloofness) and child autistic behaviours may be mediated by the child’s inattentiveness or negative affect during interactions. These findings have important implications in developing and implementing interventions in infancy which target the synchrony of parent-child interaction with the goal to support children’s social communication development.
