Résumé

Le handicap offre des considérations importantes pour les projets d'artisanat participatif qui cherchent à mettre en avant diverses formes de production de connaissances. En tant qu'étude de cas d'« artisanat du handicap », ce projet ethnographique de tricot utilise la conception collaborative de patrons de tricot pour explorer les intérêts d'adultes autistes dans le contexte du mouvement d'auto-représentation autistique aux États-Unis. Couramment appelés « intérêts spécifiques », ces intérêts remettent en question les stéréotypes capacitistes sur ce que signifie être autiste. Point crucial, ce projet a été éclairé par l'intérêt spécifique de l'autrice autiste elle-même pour le tricot, faisant des intérêts spécifiques à la fois l'objet et la méthode de la recherche. Le tricot est utilisé pour explorer ce qui est considéré comme un savoir porteur de sens et qui peut le créer. À travers les thèmes de l'identité, du bien-être et de la communication, les intérêts spécifiques se révèlent être profondément porteurs de sens. Les objets tricotés finaux issus de ce projet matérialisent des connaissances sur la manière dont les personnes autistes évoluent dans le monde et montrent comment l'artisanat peut soutenir l'activisme autistique contre l'injustice épistémique.

Disability offers important considerations for participatory crafting projects that seek to foreground diverse forms of knowledge-making. As a case study in ‘disability craft’, this ethnographic knitting project uses collaborative knitting pattern design to explore autistic adults’ interests in the context of the autistic self-advocacy movement in the United States. Colloquially known as ‘special interests’, these interests challenge ableist stereotypes about what it means to be autistic. Crucially, this project was informed by the autistic author’s own special interest of knitting, making special interests both the object and method of research. Knitting is used to explore what counts as meaningful knowledge and who can create it. Through themes of identity, well-being and communication, special interests are shown to be intensely meaningful. The final knitted objects from this project materialize knowledge about how autistic people navigate the world and show how craft can support autistic activism against epistemic injustice.
