Les personnes autistes déclarent être plus à l'aise pour socialiser et communiquer plus facilement entre elles. Bien que l'autisme soit stéréotypiquement associé à un manque de motivation sociale, une communauté autiste a été brièvement décrite dans la littérature, mais elle est mal comprise. La connexion à la communauté autiste peut jouer un rôle dans la promotion du bien-être des personnes autistes. Cette étude qualitative a consisté à interroger des personnes autistes (N = 20) en personne, par l'intermédiaire d'une plateforme vidéo, d'une plateforme textuelle ou par courrier électronique, afin d'étudier la connexion à la communauté autiste. Des outils de théorie ancrée critique ont été utilisés pour recueillir et analyser les données. La connexion à la communauté autiste comportait trois éléments : le sentiment d'appartenance, la connexion sociale et la connexion politique. Le sentiment d'appartenance renvoyait au sentiment de similarité que les personnes autistes éprouvaient les unes avec les autres. La connexion sociale renvoyait aux amitiés spécifiques que les participants ont nouées avec d'autres personnes autistes. La connexion politique renvoyait à une connexion aux objectifs politiques ou d'égalité sociale de la communauté autiste. Les participants ont décrit les avantages de la connexion à la communauté autiste comme une augmentation de l'estime de soi, un sentiment d'orientation et un sentiment de communauté non éprouvé ailleurs. L'absence de connexion impliquait une ambivalence à l'égard d'une identité autiste et/ou des sentiments de stigmatisation intériorisée. Les expériences de connexion à la communauté autiste peuvent avoir des implications pour le bien-être des personnes autistes, ainsi que pour la manière dont elles font face au stress minoritaire. Résumé grand public Un sentiment d'être connecté à d'autres personnes autistes a été rapporté de manière anecdotique. Les amitiés et la connexion peuvent être importantes pour les personnes autistes et bénéfiques pour leur bien-être. Notre recherche visait à comprendre la communauté autiste en interrogeant 20 personnes autistes sur leurs expériences de connexion à d'autres personnes autistes. Les participants ont été interrogés en personne, par vidéo, à l'aide d'un logiciel textuel pour écrire, ou par courrier électronique. Les participants ont détaillé trois composantes de la connexion à la communauté autiste : un sentiment d'appartenance, une connexion sociale avec des amis autistes et une connexion politique. Les amitiés que les personnes autistes entretenaient entre elles étaient considérées comme très importantes par les participants, car elles leur donnaient confiance, leur apportaient de la compagnie et les rendaient heureux. Certains participants n'ont pas éprouvé de connexion à la communauté autiste. Ces participants considéraient également l'autisme comme moins important pour leur identité et avaient moins de sentiments positifs à l'égard du fait d'être autistes. Cette recherche est importante car elle sensibilise au fait que la connexion communautaire est considérée comme importante pour ce groupe. Il est possible que la connexion communautaire contribue à protéger la santé mentale des personnes autistes lorsqu'elles font face à la stigmatisation ou à des expériences de vie négatives dans la société.
