Cet article s’appuie sur des entretiens qualitatifs afin d’examiner comment des psychologues de la recherche basés au Royaume-Uni comprennent les activités d’engagement du public et les interactions avec des défenseurs autistes. Les chercheurs décrivent l’engagement du public comme difficile et comprennent ces difficultés comme découlant des déficiences autistiques. En particulier, il est rapporté qu’une hétérogénéité des déficiences liées à l’autisme signifie qu’il existe peu d’accord sur la forme que devrait prendre la recherche, tandis que les déficiences socio-communicationnelles rendent les interactions difficiles. À l’inverse, les chercheurs décrivent les personnes autistes comme ayant la capacité d’influencer positivement la recherche. Dans cet article, nous discutons de la nature de ces affirmations et soulignons la nécessité de développer des modes d’engagement spécifiques à l’autisme.
