Résumé

Résumé Les différences de langage et de communication sont des caractéristiques fondamentales de l’autisme, mais peu d’études ont exploré les associations entre l’attention conjointe et les comportements de communication chez les jeunes enfants autistes. La présente étude examine des mesures du langage expressif et des comportements d’attention conjointe rapportées par les aidants, de la naissance à l’âge de 3 ans, en relevant les différences entre les enfants autistes et non autistes, ainsi que les différences selon le genre. Des analyses secondaires de données ont exploré les liens entre différents aspects du langage expressif et de l’attention conjointe dans la cohorte de population de la Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. Une analyse statistique multivariée des moyennes a été menée dans StataMP17 afin d’explorer les associations entre le langage expressif, l’attention conjointe, l’autisme et le genre. Des différences statistiquement significatives entre les enfants autistes et non autistes ont été observées pour toutes les variables sauf une concernant l’attention conjointe et le langage expressif. Les différences les plus statistiquement significatives entre les enfants autistes et non autistes concernaient le jeu de faire-semblant social et le nombre de mots connus à l’âge de 3 ans. Les mesures de l’attention conjointe permettent efficacement de différencier les garçons autistes et non autistes. Le jeu de faire-semblant social à l’âge de 3 ans permet également efficacement de différencier les filles autistes et non autistes, ainsi que les garçons et les filles autistes. Il est très probable qu’il soit possible de différencier les garçons et les filles autistes à partir des comportements de jeu de faire-semblant social à l’âge de 3 ans. Ces différences ont été observées malgré la petite taille de l’échantillon composé uniquement de filles, et les analyses ont suggéré que les comportements de jeu de faire-semblant social pourraient être des facteurs de différenciation plus importants entre les garçons et les filles autistes que les résultats relatifs à la parole ou au langage. Les implications de ces résultats pour l’éducation et les approches diagnostiques sont examinées.

Abstract Language and communication differences are core characteristics of autism, but few studies have explored the associations of joint attention and communication behaviours in young autistic children. The current study explores caregiver-reported measures of expressive language and joint attention behaviours from birth to age 3, noting differences between autistic and non-autistic children, as well as gender differences. Secondary data analyses exploring links between different aspects of expressive language and joint attention on the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children population cohort. multivariate test of means statistical analysis conducted in StataMP17 to explore the associations of expressive language, joint attention, autism, and gender. Statistically significant differences between autistic and non-autistic children for all but one of the variables regarding joint attention and expressive language. Differences in social pretend play and number of words known at age 3 between autistic and non-autistic children were most statistically significant. Joint attention measures are effective in differentiating autistic and non-autistic boys. Social pretend play at age 3 is also effective in differentiating autistic and non-autistic girls, and autistic boys and girls. It is highly likely to be able to differentiate between autistic boys and girls through social pretend play behaviours at age 3. These differences were observed despite the small sample size of only girls, and the analyses suggested that social pretend play behaviours may be more important differentiators of autistic boys and girls than speech or language outcomes. The implications of these findings for education and diagnostic approaches are discussed.
