Résumé
Relativement peu d'études ont examiné les différences entre les sexes chez les nourrissons et les tout-petits, et la plupart portent sur des échantillons orientés vers des services cliniques ou des cohortes de nourrissons à haut risque. La présente étude visait à examiner les différences entre les sexes dans les manifestations précoces de l'autisme et le développement cognitif au sein d'un échantillon recruté en population générale. Au total, 46 garçons et 21 filles présentant un TSA ont été examinés vers l'âge de 24 et 48 mois. Aucune différence significative entre les sexes n'a été observée concernant les capacités cognitives globales, les compétences verbales, les compétences non verbales, la sévérité globale de l'autisme ou les comportements restreints et répétitifs. Toutefois, les filles présentaient davantage d'altérations de la communication sociale que les garçons. Ces résultats pourraient indiquer que les tout-petites présentant des altérations de la communication sociale moins sévères ou différentes sont plus susceptibles de ne pas être repérées lors de la surveillance systématique au cours de la petite enfance.
