Abstract

This chapter considers learning and teaching through the lens of the author's autistic experience. It explores the role that special interests can play in providing joy and opportunity, while also addressing the difficulties of navigating neurotypical learning norms. Drawing on professional experience as both a teacher and researcher, the author reflects on some of the broader challenges within mainstream education in relation to neurodiversity, and engages with some of the pedagogical, social, and political debates relating to special education needs and the disability movement.

Cited bibliography overview

These indicators describe the bibliography cited by this publication. An author name is counted each time it appears in one cited reference, so the same person can be counted more than once. Names not yet linked to an author already present in AutiHub are treated as unknown, not as non-autistic. Last computed: 23 Oct 2026 07:41.
