Les fonctions exécutives sont liées à des résultats clés. Des études sur l’autoévaluation par des jeunes autistes d’autres traits non sociaux indiquent que leurs perceptions de leur propre fonctionnement et de leurs expériences internes fournissent des informations importantes qui ne sont pas recueillies par le rapport de leurs parents, mais l’autoévaluation des fonctions exécutives par les jeunes n’a pas été étudiée dans l’autisme. Nous examinons l’autoévaluation et le rapport parental à l’aide du Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-2 chez 197 jeunes autistes sans déficience intellectuelle, y compris l’ampleur et le profil des problèmes signalés dans les sous-domaines des fonctions exécutives. Nous comparons également l’autoévaluation des jeunes autistes à celle de 114 jeunes présentant un trouble déficitaire de l’attention avec hyperactivité et de 197 jeunes neurotypiques. Nous constatons que les jeunes autistes signalent des difficultés significatives des fonctions exécutives par rapport aux jeunes neurotypiques, ainsi qu’un profil distinctif de difficultés par rapport aux jeunes présentant un trouble déficitaire de l’attention avec hyperactivité. Les parents et leurs enfants autistes divergent quant à la sévérité des difficultés des fonctions exécutives des jeunes, mais tous deux mettent l’accent sur les problèmes de flexibilité dans leur profil de difficultés des fonctions exécutives. Les coefficients de corrélation intraclasse entre les évaluations des parents et des jeunes étaient modérés à faibles dans le groupe autiste, ce qui indique que le rapport des jeunes autistes apporte des informations importantes au-delà de celles recueillies par le rapport de leurs parents. Ces données soulignent l’importance d’interroger directement les jeunes autistes sur leurs propres fonctions exécutives. L’évaluation des fonctions exécutives aide les personnes autistes, les cliniciens et les familles à identifier des cibles pour les soutiens externes et le développement des compétences. L’autoévaluation des fonctions exécutives par les jeunes n’a pas été étudiée, alors que nous savons que l’autoévaluation par les jeunes autistes est essentielle pour comprendre d’autres phénomènes cognitifs et comportementaux dans l’autisme, tels que l’anxiété, les obsessions et compulsions, les sensibilités sensorielles et les comportements répétitifs. Nous avons étudié l’autoévaluation et le rapport parental des problèmes de fonctions exécutives chez 197 jeunes autistes sans déficience intellectuelle (âgés de 11 à 18 ans), y compris l’ampleur et les profils des problèmes de fonctions exécutives que les jeunes autistes signalent dans les sous-domaines des fonctions exécutives. Nous avons comparé l’autoévaluation des jeunes autistes à celle de 114 jeunes présentant un trouble déficitaire de l’attention avec hyperactivité sans déficience intellectuelle et de 197 jeunes neurotypiques. Nous avons constaté que les jeunes autistes signalent des problèmes significatifs de fonctions exécutives par rapport aux jeunes neurotypiques, ainsi qu’un profil distinctif de difficultés par rapport aux jeunes présentant un trouble déficitaire de l’attention avec hyperactivité. Les parents et leurs enfants autistes divergeaient quant à l’ampleur des difficultés des fonctions exécutives des jeunes, mais tous deux identifient l’inflexibilité comme le sous-domaine des fonctions exécutives le plus altéré. Les jeunes autistes et leurs parents étaient quelque peu plus concordants dans leur signalement des problèmes de fonctions exécutives que les jeunes présentant un trouble déficitaire de l’attention avec hyperactivité et leurs parents, mais ne montraient au mieux qu’une concordance modérée. Ces résultats soulignent l’importance d’interroger directement les jeunes autistes sur leur fonctionnement exécutif lors de leur participation à une évaluation et à une intervention, ou dans le cadre de recherches sur les fonctions exécutives dans l’autisme.
