Résumé
Avec tant d’inconnues au sujet de l’autisme, le handicap tend à refléter les préconceptions socioculturelles que les gens y projettent. Le récit prédominant dans la société occidentale de l’autisme comme une « maladie » au sein du modèle médical contraste avec la vision plus positive et habilitante de l’autisme comme une « différence » dans le modèle social et le mouvement de la neurodiversité. La société a également discriminé et rendu handicapés les Amérindiens navajos depuis l’arrivée des Euro-Américains. Les Navajos concilient avec résilience l’exercice de l’autodétermination au sein de leur propre nation et l’adaptation à la société extérieure, avec une culture qui demeure remarquablement intacte. Les Navajos ont ainsi offert une occasion exceptionnelle d’analyse interculturelle. Cela a suggéré que les constructions sociales navajos traditionnelles d’harmonie et de beauté, telles qu’elles sont englobées par une philosophie du bien-être appelée Hozho, répondent mieux aux besoins des personnes autistes que la notion occidentale de « progrès » par la science et la technologie.
