Résumé

Dans cet article, nous explorons l’importance de la métaphore et des récits culturels dominants dans le discours actuel sur l’autisme. Nous examinons brièvement l’histoire de la métaphore dans le discours sur l’autisme et décrivons la lutte contemporaine entre la métaphore culturellement dominante de l’autisme comme maladie et le contre-récit émergent de l’autisme au sein de la neurodiversité. Nous soutenons que la métaphore remplit des fonctions très spécifiques dans le discours sur l’autisme, notamment (1) créer une cohérence narrative de sens commun entre les compréhensions courantes de l’autisme et les notions actuellement dominantes concernant son ou ses étiologies ou sa ou ses causes, et (2) créer une cohérence narrative de sens commun entre les compréhensions courantes de l’autisme et les notions actuellement dominantes concernant les réponses appropriées à l’autisme ou les interventions appropriées pour l’autisme. Nous soutenons que la majeure partie du soutien au cadrage métaphorique de l’autisme dans un modèle de maladie provient de la communauté non autiste (« neurotypique » ou « NT »), tandis que la majeure partie du soutien au cadrage métaphorique de l’autisme dans un modèle de neurodiversité provient de la communauté autiste (et inclut également certains alliés non autistes). En explorant ces récits culturels concurrents, nous soutenons l’importance cruciale que le contre-récit peut jouer dans le processus de critique culturelle et de résistance à l’hégémonie idéologique.

In this paper we explore the significance of metaphor and dominant cultural narratives in current autism discourse. We briefly explore the history of metaphor in autism discourse, and outline the contemporary struggle between the culturally dominant metaphor of autism as disease and the emergent counter‐narrative of autism within neurodiversity. We argue that metaphor serves very specific purposes in autism discourse, including (1) to create a commonsensical narrative congruence between common understandings of autism and currently dominant notions about its aetiology(ies) or causes(s), and (2) to create a commonsensical narrative congruence between common understandings of autism and currently dominant notions about appropriate responses to or interventions for autism. We argue that the bulk of the support for metaphorically framing autism within a disease model comes from within the non‐autistic (‘neurotypical’ or ‘NT’) community, whereas the bulk of the support for metaphorically framing autism within a neurodiversity model comes from within the autistic community (and is inclusive of some non‐autistic allies as well). In exploring these competing cultural narratives, we argue for the crucial import that counter‐narrative can play in the process of cultural critique and resistance to ideological hegemony.
