L'évolution au fil du temps de l'âge et du nombre d'enfants enregistrés pour un financement spécifique à l'autisme a été examinée, avant et après l'introduction des critères diagnostiques révisés (le Manuel diagnostique et statistique des troubles mentaux, cinquième édition ; DSM-5). Des données désidentifiées concernant 32 199 enfants âgés de moins de 7 ans entre 2010 et 2015 ont été utilisées. Des fluctuations étaient manifestes dans la fréquence et l'âge des diagnostics, de légères augmentations de l'âge au diagnostic correspondant à des augmentations de la fréquence des diagnostics. L'incidence de l'autisme a augmenté de 2010 à 2013, puis s'est stabilisée jusqu'en 2015. Une réduction significative, par rapport à la tendance, du nombre d'enfants enregistrés pour recevoir un financement spécifique à l'autisme était manifeste après 2013, ce qui suggère que les critères plus stricts du DSM-5 pourraient avoir freiné la tendance à l'augmentation des diagnostics au fil du temps.
