Résumé

Objectif Des soutiens précoces sont proposés afin de favoriser les résultats chez les enfants autistes et les enfants présentant des différences de communication sociale. Pour les familles migrantes, les soutiens précoces peuvent être particulièrement essentiels en raison des difficultés supplémentaires auxquelles elles peuvent être confrontées. Méthode Dans cette étude participative à méthodes mixtes, nous avons examiné la faisabilité et l'acceptabilité de Hanen® More Than Words pour les familles migrantes ayant des enfants autistes et des enfants présentant des différences de communication sociale. Des familles chinoises et sud-asiatiques vivant en Australie (n = 15) se sont vu proposer Hanen® More Than Words, dispensé respectivement en mandarin/cantonais et en anglais. Des données sur les expériences des participants ont été recueillies au moyen d'entretiens et de questionnaires. Cette étude a été enregistrée auprès de l'Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry [#ACTRN12624000312549p]. Résultat Les taux de participation étaient élevés (86,7 %), seules deux familles s'étant retirées en raison d'engagements concurrents. Dans l'ensemble, les participants étaient satisfaits de Hanen® More Than Words, mais certains aspects du programme étaient difficiles pour les participants chinois en particulier, notamment les stratégies de communication (c.-à-d. suivre l'initiative de leur enfant) et les jeux de rôle. Les participants ont signalé des difficultés logistiques pour assister aux séances en présentiel, mais ont apprécié l'apprentissage en groupe avec des pairs ayant des origines et des expériences similaires. Bien que les participants aient décrit une meilleure compréhension et acceptation de leurs enfants après Hanen® More Than Words, différents éléments du programme ont façonné les apprentissages des individus. Conclusion Les résultats apportent des preuves de la faisabilité et de l'acceptabilité de Hanen® More Than Words pour les familles migrantes chinoises et sud-asiatiques vivant en Australie.

Purpose Early supports are provided to promote outcomes for autistic children and children with social communication differences. For migrant families, early supports may be especially vital due to additional challenges they can face.Method In this mixed-method participatory study, we investigated feasibility and acceptability of Hanen® More Than Words for migrant families with autistic children and those showing social communication differences. Australian-based Chinese and South Asian families (n = 15) were offered Hanen® More Than Words delivered in Mandarin/Cantonese and English respectively. Data were collected about participants’ experiences via interviews and questionnaires. This study was registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry [#ACTRN12624000312549p].Result Attendance rates were high (86.7%) with only two families withdrawing due to competing commitments. Overall, participants were satisfied with Hanen® More Than Words but some program aspects were challenging for Chinese participants especially—including communication strategies (i.e. following their child’s lead) and role playing. Participants reported logistical challenges to attending face-to-face sessions but valued group-based learning with peers who had similar backgrounds and experiences. Although participants described more understanding and acceptance of their children after Hanen® More Than Words, different program elements shaped individuals’ learnings.Conclusion Findings provide evidence of feasibility and acceptability of Hanen® More Than Words for migrant Chinese and South Asian families living in Australia.
