Le point de vue des parents et leurs attentes à l'égard de la musicothérapie ont été précédemment rapportés dans la littérature. Cependant, les recherches sur les perceptions des parents concernant la musicothérapie familiale à long terme centrée sur la famille font défaut. Cette étude qualitative examine les expériences de mères d'enfants autistes ayant participé à un programme de musicothérapie centré sur la famille d'une durée minimale de trois ans. Au moyen d'entretiens semi-structurés avec sept mères et en employant l'analyse thématique réflexive, cette étude vise à comprendre les manières nuancées dont ces parents ont vécu la musicothérapie à long terme pour leur enfant et leur famille. Deux thèmes principaux ont émergé de l'analyse, chacun comportant des sous-thèmes associés. Le thème 1 - La musicothérapie à long terme favorise le bien-être subjectif de l'enfant et de la famille - comprend trois sous-thèmes : (a) partager la joie par des interactions musicales soutient le bien-être ; (b) une occasion pour l'enfant d'être lui-même ; et (c) la musique comme soutien à la vie quotidienne. Le thème 2 - Les parents ont perçu des changements dans le développement de leur enfant - comprend six sous-thèmes : (a) se concentrer sur l'enfant dans sa globalité ; (b) soutenir le développement cognitif ; (c) soutenir les compétences sociales ; (d) soutenir les compétences émotionnelles ; (e) soutenir la conscience corporelle ; et (f) développer les forces et les ressources de l'enfant. Ces mères ont indiqué que les séances de musicothérapie à long terme avec leur enfant les ont aidées à éprouver un sentiment de soulagement et de catharsis, ce qui, selon elles, les a aidées à faire face aux difficultés qu'elles rencontraient en s'adaptant à la trajectoire développementale différente de leurs enfants. De plus, l'analyse des entretiens avec les parents révèle leur perception selon laquelle la musicothérapie à long terme peut renforcer le bien-être familial en facilitant l'expression émotionnelle et en tirant parti des forces de l'enfant. Cette étude qualitative met donc en évidence les bénéfices potentiels multiples de la musicothérapie à long terme, fournissant des éclairages précieux sur son rôle possible dans l'amélioration de la vie des enfants autistes et de leurs familles.
